Wednesday Night Bible Studies

    Our Wednesday night Bible Study has been led by our Associate Pastor, but he has accepted a call to a Church of his own. That means the Pastor has asked me to take over on Wednesday nights.

    I have filled in on Wednesday nights but have never taught an ongoing Bible Study. Our Wednesday night group is small, usually about 15 people who are 99% mature Christians. Do you have any suggestions for good ongoing studies? One of the other Deacons has come material on a study of the Life of Paul that he is going to let me look at.

    Do you do a different study each week, try to do a series of studies building one lesson on the next, or teach a book of the Bible from beginning to end? Any advice would be appreciated.

    I prefer to do 1) a book or 2) topic study (and if it's a topic, I want it to be a good one -- like the life of Paul).

    I do think there is a place for week to week topics -- like around Christmas when we have a hard time remembering our names.

    If I am a participant (and not the leader), I like to have a some kind of schedule, so that I can prep for the class too.

    Have you gone to the LifeWay.com site. They've got some 6 to 13 week studies that might give you some ideas. There's also still a lot of old January Bible study materials floating around - not especially in-depth, but a place to start. When the group is small, I like to take suggestions to them of things I'd like to study and then let them choose from that.

    What a great opportunity for you! That is a real mark of the trust that the Pastor has in you to give you that kind of group.

    I like to do a series of messages with no real set finishing time. We give lots of time for questions and discussion, which would be really good for a mature group of believers.

    We're right now doing a chronological study of the life of Christ. We've also done doctrinal studies.

    Yes that level of turst suprises me. After I filled in for the first time I figured that I wouldn't be asked to do it again, and then I was. Everyone has told me I do a good job, but I figured that they were just being nice. Now I am asked to teach on a regular basis. I can only say that it is God equiping me for this service.

    The Church seems happy with the outcome of our VBS last week, and the Pastor's wife told my wife that the Pastor and ther other Deacons are pleased with how I am jumping in at the work of a Deacon. Once I again I feel I should be doing more than I am. God has given me these areas to serve Him, and it seems he is also keeping me humble about it.

    Dose me saying I am humble about something make me prideful about it? :confused:

    Congrats

    As to a book study, why not the Sermon on the Mount, We did a 2 mth study on it, and it really changed the way people viewed salvation, righteousness, and God's desire for man.

    I really wasn't looking for topic suggestions, but for some reason your suggestion for the Sermon on the Mount hit home. I have started putting to gether a lesson on it. Due to time constraignts I belive I will start with a general overview for this week and move into a detailed study in the following weeks.

    There are some good studies available at NavPress.

    Also, I realize this isn't a Sunday School class, but what would be wrong with using an Adult Sunday School Curriculum? I don't necessarily mean that everyone would have a Sunday School book, but if you do a search for "Sunday School Curriculum", you'll find many publishers that have teacher's guides that include handouts that you can photo-copy and give to the participants. Just a thought.

    Scrapping Wednesday Nights as you know them

    Get rid of the normal Wednesday night routine. Don't teach anything, use the time to allow the church to pray together only. We did that and it has made a world of difference in our church. We start off with a song or two, have a short scripture reading and very brief application, usually in Psalms. Then we take requests and break up and pray. When you are done praying you are automatically dismissed. Sometimes we pray the prayer list, sometimes it is over up coming activities. Some times we pray for specific souls or other needs.

    Get rid of the Wednesdays that you know of and help your church get serious with God about the pressing matters in and around the church.

    I was not asked to lead a prayer meeting, I was asked to lead a Bible Study. That being said I know of some members of the church who do attend on Wed. nights that would like to see more time devoted to prayer. I plan to have an alter prayer time where anyone who feels the call of god can pray. I see this as an addition to not a replacement for the Bible Study.

    I usually "mix" it up

    Sometimes I will teach through a book

    Sometimes a character study--ex: The Twelve Apostles--what made them "Tic"

    Specific chapters of books----I spent quite some time on Hebrews 11--verse by verse and word by word

    Gifts of the Spirit

    Fruit of the Spirit

    Revelation Chapter 1---is always a favorite of mine

    As well as the Churches of Revelation in Rev. 2 & 3
