    Hello everyone,,
I'm looking for information on early United Baptists in western Tennessee. Some of our early churches in Texas were started by men out of Tennessee, including Z. N. Morrell, who wrote Flowers and Fruits from the Wilderness. He left Tennessee circa 1834. He mentioned churches organizing churches on the articles of faith of the United Baptists of West Tennessee. This would be circa 1838 and later. I am interested in finding articles of faith representative of the United Baptists of West Tennessee during this period.

Any have them or know the most likely place to find them? (I'm hoping internet, but beggars can't be choosers!) Thanks.

elysse, I have some information that should help. I have recently been researching Isaac Reed, who came to Texas from West Tennessee in 1834, a little before Z. N. Morrell made the trip. Morrell mentions that he was acquainted with Reed in West Tennessee. In this research, I was looking at the old Western District and Obion Associations' minutes. Z. N. Morrell was mentioned several years as a correspondent to the Obion Association from the Forked Deer Association. So we know that at least for a time before coming to Texas, Z. N. Morrell was in the Forked Deer Association. There is a transcription at Baptist History Homepage of the Articles of Faith of the Forked Deer Association from 1825.

These most likely represent what Morrell meant, since he was in that association. The Western District Association was the first organized in western Tennessee, and its Abstract of Principles is also online.

Elysse, I didn't realize you were quoting my post from 7 years ago when I answered the question concerning the Articles of Faith of the United Baptists of West Tennessee. (My memory obviously is not as good as Jerome's!) Now I am really curious what was going on with your question. I hope to hear back from you. Thanks!
