What are the best study Bibles?

    I am an engineering student wantabee pastor and am trying to build my library for my future career which God has yet to call me (please! please! please!)

    This topic has probably been hashed to death but, I was hoping for some more info.
    I was wondering what you guys thought of study Bibles, which are the best, and whether they are similar enough that you need only own one, or if you get a lot of the theology of the paticular commentator/ editor.

    I of course, will not rely on them soley when preaching. I have been collecting and reading commentaires on different books of the Bible, and slowly learning the Biblcal languages. It would be nice though, for now and later to have some study Bibles on hand.

    My wife and I both have a Ryrie study Bible, and we enjoy that. What are your opinions?

    Ryrie that you have also Scofield Reference Bible and the New Scofield Reference Bible and The Thompson Chan Reference Bible to name some that I use.

    Not a big fan of Ryrie myself. The NASB study Bible (Zondervan) is outstanding. Broadman and Holman's "Disciple's Study Bible" is very good.

    Dr. Daniel Akin at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary has an excellent booklet entitled "Building a Theological Library." If you write him at Southern Seminary and ask for a copy, especially if you are a prospetctive seminarian, I believe you'll receive a copy free.

    I like the Oxford and the Harper Collins ones myself. The footnotes are a little more detailed in the Harper Collins, and a little less Anglican in flavor.
