One of the things that confuses me about what people mean when they say they are a fundamentalist, is what they consider to be fundamentals.

Please choose in the poll from the following options:

Sola Scriptura
The Christian and alcohol
The virgin birth
Smoking and tobacco
Justification By Faith alone
Music standards (no rock music etc)
Sola Fide (Faith alone)
The KJV Bible
The Deity of CHrist
Conservative politics (abortion protesting etc)
Sola Gratia (By grace alone)
Sincere love for people
Soli Deo gloria (Glory to God alone)

Your focus is to minor on the majors and major on the minors. Your list omits some of great fundamentals of the Bible. For example: the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ, the trinity, to name a couple. There are many more.
Your list also includes some trivialities. But I won't go there.

It intentionally includes trivial things.
That doesn't mean I put stock in them.

Also, I ran out of poll options.
I was going for about 15 at first and then it would only let me to do ten.

I put the "other" option so you can add things.

I BTW do find the substitutionary attonement to be a fundamental.
I forgot to put that in and I was running out of options anyway.

I agree, there are some fundamentals missing, but of the one's listed, those are the ones I voted.
That is what I intended. I think when they upgraded the forum software it made the poll option a lot more limited.

Too bad because it makes it hard to be complete.
I think I will start a second thread with a continuation of things that should be on this list.

I can then add a second 10 so please tell me what i left off and I will add that to the second list.

This list does not denote my "focus" these are merely things that I have seen various people focus on.
I have never seen anyone put a fundamental focus and all of them at once.

He was limited to ten choices by the BB software.

I wanted to come up with everything I could think of that anyone might consider a fundamental. or at least those things that people might focus on like they were a fundamental.

Sola Scriptura

The virgin birth

Sola Gracia/Sola Fide (Grace/Faith alone)

The Deity of CHrist

Soli Deo gloria (Glory to God alone)

These are fundamentals of faith.

The others are topics of conservatism and may be related to the practice of faith, but are not found to be requirements of it.

My computer's a bit slow (a lot slow). I saw only his first post (and not the actual poll) when I responded. When I posted I thought I was responding to a list in his post, and not a poll, that my computer hadn't loaded yet. The mistake is mine.

Actually, another glitch of the BB software is that it posts the thread before you finish the poll.
It was probably 3 or 4 minutes before the poll was added to the thread

I haven't voted yet because I'm not sure what you mean by "fundamentals."

Do the "fundamentals" mean the "things I believe" or "things which are required to be a true Christian" or "things which are required for me to have fellowship with another" or something else?

I meant hte fundamentals as in the things you find as fundamental to the christian faith.
Things that are crucial to Christianity.
So you may believe some of hte other things but you may not think of them as fundamentals.

For instance, I believe Sola Scripture is a fundamental.
I think abortion is wrong and a good thing to protest but protesting is not a fundamental of the Christian faith.

I liken the fundamentals to what is necessary for a car to run. AC and radio isn't necessary. gas, tires engine would be.

For me the fundamentals would be
  • Inerrancy and suffeciency of the Bible
  • Person of Christ: - virgin birth, perfect life, substitutionary atonement and physical resurrection
  • Salvation by grace thru faith apart from any works.
I didn't check "Glory to God alone" because I think that enters into the area of a command to be obeyed rather than a fundamental doctrine.

If pressed I might add a belief in the return of Jesus. I wouldn't be too much more specific because there are plenty of godly men who love Jesus and His Word who disagree about the specifics.

I would add eternal security to the list.

And somewhere I think we must deal with baptism--by immersion of believers only as a public testimony of ones profession and to picture Jesus' death, burial and resurrection as the gospel in a nutshell.

Nature and work of Christ, sola scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia, parousia.

These are what I see in Scripture as the fundamentals or essentials of the Christian faith.

While I certainly believe both of these teachings, I don't think they are at all essential (that is, someone is not a true believer unless they believe and act upon it) to Christian faith.

If you keep adding things, when it gets to five or so I may start another poll to add the additional options.
