D.A. Carson is a most excellent New Testament scholar who is also a Baptist:

Paul House did likewise with the Old Testament:

For more in-depth looks at certain aspects of theology, I highly recommend Thomas Schreiner:

I have also utilized the "Encountering" series, OT, NT, biblical books, etc., and have found the scholarship to be good, and more so, readable. While the authors are not "Baptist" per se, they are evangelical and in line with Baptist theology. The books are often used at SBTS by various profs.

wasn't DA Carson one of the authors in the baker NT Commentary set?

Have you read those 2 books I have? How did you like them?

Yes...

I've read some of Guthrie, and none of the other.

The issue with OT and NT surveys is that they depend on the position of the author on several fronts. Do they hold to the school of higher criticism, and with it the idea that the Bible must be explained away instead of followed faithfully? Or, do they come from a more fundamentalist perspective, where they repeat the (sometimes) faulty scholarship of others without checking source material to see if that scholarship is valid?

We can read either of the above -- no problem there -- but if one is going to base some sound understanding of doctrine on work that is not itself based on sound hermeneutic and cultural/historical research, we may be led astray by convincing arguments that are not, in fact, true.

I tend to seek out sold Evangelical work that uses good resources and sound scholarship, and that is peer-reviewed. Then, even if the theological stance does not align with my own, I at least know where the author comes from and how to interpret what he or she has written.

At least Guthrie/harrison seemed to both be from the "evangelical Wing, solid in their understanding, and also interacted with modern 'critical" theories..

remember 2 others have read... Intro to OT by Gleason Archer, more a "survey" seemed very good, totally conservative
other OT Intro by Fuller Theological staff editors, seemed to "cater" too much to critcal views for my taste!

HAVE YOU NOT HEARD!!!!!!!!

Andreas J. Kostenberger, L. Scott Kellum and Charles Quarles just put out a brand new NT intro called The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown thus making it truly "baptist".

It is awesome. What I love about it is its treatment of biblical theology which is often overlooked in many intros and surveys.

My favorite OT intro/survey is Hill and Walton although I'm not sure that it fits the "baptist" model but definitely evangelical.
