What changes in the relationship in Genesis 4:26

Genesis 4:26b, ".......men began to call upon the name of the Lord....."

What does that mean?

How does the relationship change between God and humanity at this point?

Before this sin changes the relationship between God and man, after this point man becomes so perverse that God wipes out humanity in the flood.

What does 4:26 mean? Is it an important point in the God/human relationship?

Thanks for your answers to what I'm sure is a pretty basic kind of a question.

I had to think on this one. I went through Strong's Concordance to see if there was a meaning to the words "began", "call", "name" and "Lord" that might be helpful. That didn't help me any, so I looked at the context.

My answer is not definitive and I'm not through thinking.

I went back through all of chapter four and what I see is the pattern of humanity declining into ... well, humanism. You have:
  • Cain's spiral decline into self-centeredness, murder, denial of sin, and open defiance and rebellion against God.
  • Cain's building of a city and naming it after his son - exalting his own "work" of producing an heir. To me, this contrasts greatly with Eve's declaration of "..with the Lord's help, I have gotten a man.." when she produced an heir.
  • Lamech's bigamy. Lamech's declaration that - yes, he murdered someone - but that he was untouchable for it and that anyone who sought to punish HIM would be punished themselves.
Then you have Eve bearing another son - Seth. And it says that people began to call upon the name of the Lord.

I don't see this - and I may be wrong - as meaning that no one cried out to God before this.

To me, I see this as a constrast of society. Those who govern themselves and are their own gods. And those who recognize who they are before God Almighty and who cry out to Him for leadership.

Of course, by the time that chapter 6 appears - those who found favor with God and who called upon His Name were limited .............greatly!

This is the first recorded corporate prayer meeting...the godly line gathering together communing with God in worship and praise....in contrast to the seed of the serpent ...the ungodly line . This is a progression in redemptive history. The appointing of another seed...Seth....these are parts of God's history of redemption being progressively revealed.

According to my commentaries, this is when corporate worship began through the line of Seth.

Thanks for the question. I had not realized this before.

The flood was a judgement of God to protect the godly line from the ungodly line. God preserved the seed of the woman:thumbs:

I wasn't going to ask you this after your first post, but now I have to ask. Do you hold to the Serpent Seed Doctrine?

No...that is a perverted and wicked falsehood
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpent_seed

No ..redemptive history traces the seed of the woman...the godly line..the elect of God

the seed of the serpent...the ungodly line......non elect....two kingdoms..darkness/light holy/profane......sanctified/unsanctifed

there is a seperation of the two all through the scripture.....

I think you had best be served by researching this a bit more in the original Hebrew.

chalal - to profane, defile, pollute, desecrate

At this time, men began to CURSE the NAME of the LORD.
... and it all went "downhill" from here until God brought the FLOOD in Gen. 6

There was no "Godly line". The bene ha Elohim in Gen. 6 were "Sons of God", ie: angels (fallen).

Things went from bad to worse to horrific by corruption of the entire Human genome (except for 8 people).

It is interesting that the idea of corporate worship begins so close to humanity deteriorating to the flood.

Note that Cain purposely/deliberately offered up the wrong (unapproved) offering in what could best be described as an act of rebellion. Gen 4:1-5

Note also that God was in direct communication with mankind during this period of time. Also note how polite and considerate God was of man at this time:
And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?
God was so gentle and kind toward his human creation and yet already acts of outright rebellion and disrespect were directed toward God.

Things did not "get better" following the murder of Able by Cain, they got progressively worse.
All this talk of "corporate worship" of God starting with Seth is just complete nonsense.
People could talk directly to God at this point and yet were already deliberately disrespecting God "to his face".

This is the condition of mankind from the fall on through Genesis 6:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Romans 1:21

Wycliffe, Young and every other translation disagree with the curse interpretation. So I will veer away from it for now.

That is another "idea" that was borrowed from the Catholics way back when.
The "organized Church" did not want to defend the obvious conclusion
of the fallen angels (bene ha elohim) cohabiting with human women and producing hybrids.
[Remember that "sex" was already a "taboo" subject among the Catholic church.]
It is often best to go back to the Rabbinic literature to get the understanding of the Hebrew.

These are the generations of Noah:
Noah was a
just man
[righteous before God] and
perfect in his generations,
[genetically pure as in "without spot or blemish"] and
Noah walked with God.
[Noah could "hear" the Lord God] Genesis 6:9

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about;
There was no "Godly line".

25And Adam again knoweth his wife, and she beareth a son, and calleth his name Seth, `for God hath appointed for me another seed instead of Abel:' for Cain had slain him.

angels did not fornicate with women.....

Do you believe that Jesus is God come in the flesh?

Many good Bible teachers and scholars do take the view that the reference to “angels who did not keep their own domain” is a reference to that group of fallen angels whom Satan persuaded to cohabit with women (Gen. 6:1-4) MacArthur is one of them.

You don't have to "refer" to a "Bible scholar" (like Wycliff, MacArthur, ad infinitum), you simply refer to what the Holy Spirit has provided for us!

Jude 6 - oikētērion Strong's G3613
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation [oikētērion],
he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication,
and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

2 Cor 5:2 - oikētērion Strong's G3613
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house
not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our
house [oikētērion] which is from heaven:

oikētērion is a glorified body, pure and simple!

Satan's fallen angels "gave up" their oikētērion so they could pollute human DNA and thus make it IMPOSSIBLE
for God to provide a SAVIOR for MAN.
Noah and his sons "saved the Human Race" from extinction.
