Here it is, from a listener of sermons. [IMG]
    1. If I learn something new from it, or get a different perspective on something I've studied before.
    2. If I can apply it to my own life.
    3. If it's presented in a manner that motivates me to do something about it. If it's the truth I WILL be motivated.

If a pastor stands up and makes me feel like dirt, I will not be very motivated to act on ANYTHING except out of fear and/or shame.
If I feel uncomfortable, and I WILL at times, it should be because a part of the gospel has been presented that I'm not living up to, NOT because a pastor glared from the pulpit and told me I was no good for not doing x, x, and x.

It's kinda the same concept as teaching children. You don't scream and yell and degrade them to teach them how to love and obey authority, or constantly point out their deficiencies to keep them humble.

A good sermon is one in which Jesus Christ is placarded before the congregation in His offices of Prophet, Priest, and King. [IMG]

I prefer exegetical over topical. And I like it when Bible is used to explain Bible. When both of those happen, I think I always come out having learned something and appreciating God more for the way it all fits together.

I don't need to be inspired in the emotional sense. I get enough of that with children and grandchildren and poetry and all the emails I get 'sharing' inspirational stories, the vast majority of which are not true!

Let me learn. Everytime I learn more about His Word, I am also learning more about God Himself. And the more I learn about God, the more I love and want to be close to Him and obey Him. It's an automatic thing with me... [IMG]

I like it when pastors yell and scream and beat the pulpit like wildmen. Then I yell back Amen brother, Give'm the WORD!

    LOL
I find it just plain scary. I don't like being screamed at. Never really have.

So glad that the good Lord intervenes. Those times when my human flesh is discouraged at my lack of abilities I am encouraged to see and here how the Lord convicts despite my deficencies.
Of course, the reverse can also be true when I am not prepared to wait upon Him in prayer.
    yours, Jon

A good sermon always convicts of sin and points the sinner to Jesus Christ. They are delivered in so many different ways that there is something for everyone if they will only look. [IMG]

To me a good sermon is when I get convicted so badly that I sink into my pew and shed tears of repentance and go in front of my church family and confess to Jesus. My church family will come and pray over me and then hold me accountable.
I am sorry to say I have not heard a sermon like that in a long time! :(

    It was Luther who said:

    1. Stand up cheerfully.....Stand up

    2. Speak out manfully......Speak up

    3. Leave off speedily......Shut up

    Cheers,

    Jim

I am wondering why some thing that a good sermon convicts of sin and points to Jesus. Isn't church essentially a place for Christians? Shouldn't we be getting more than the milk?

edit: if that sounds like I am saying 'leave Jesus out' I most certainly am not! But Christians already know Jesus, right? Shouldn't we be looking at more and more of the Bible, since all of it is God's Holy Word?

    Sister Helen and others!

What constitutes a good sermon? When I'm finished--the folks get a clear picture of Jesus! "That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection."--The Apostle Paul got to know the Lord Jesus--not on the Damascus Road but by passing over, through, above, and into what we know as the Old Testament. Only we have an advantage over Paul--we have 66 books to dive into! Expound upon the scripture! Tell me the story of Jesus over and over and over again!

    A good sermon, hmmm...
Biblically/theologically accurate, spiritually nuturing, God-spoken, and most importantly glorifying and pleasing to God. I could probably list more, but thats a good basic idea.

    Soli deo gloria,
    Bob

A good sermon to me is usually the one that the pastor enjoys giving, and of course he has done his homework.I do not like any pastor giving me the I AM HOLIER THAN THOU MESSAGE and the famous guilt trip.

sermon notes: Pound the pulpit and shout,,,,argument weak.

Point to brother in pew and say Amen.....affirmation for your gaseous verbosity.

Check clock...how much more do you have to repeat?

    I don't know,

    Jim

    Brother G'Day!

Good description, Mate! I've been preaching now for 15 years and each time I preach--seems to get sweeter and sweeter!

An example here--my dad worked for the phone company. I knew how much he loved what he was doing. And he worked hard at it. When you saw him working--it appeared as if he were working in a gold mine!

Well, that's me, too! I work in a gold mine all week long--and on Sunday and Wednesdays--I show up at church with the gold--and just start "throwin'" it at the folks who sit in front of me--of course, don't nobody here take me literally--but you CAN take that spiritually!!

I'm in the gold mine!! And I share what I find with my fine folks in Mississippi!

    Blackbird
