Just wondering what a crowd of 100% baptists think about gluttony. Personally, and I'm trying not to sound too harsh or attack any individual personally, but it bothers me greatly that overeating has seemingly become an accepted vice, and often times what people eat when they are overeating is very bad for them, and often times people don't realize this. The more I read, the more upset I become at the ignorance of this problem in our nation. What's even more troubling is that I see multiple articles that specifically point out Baptists, and especially southern Baptists, as the ones with the biggest problems in this department. Below is the latest example of an article along these lines.

The article is garbage! Yes we fellowship. Yes we have pot luck suppers. What is wrong with that? Be accountable man! The bible is against gluttony. If you are a glutton, you are in sin.

The article was just another excuse to slam us when the real problem isn't religious gluttons' but gluttons in general. We have become a nation of porkers. That issue will spill over into the congregations as well. Truth be told, we as christians at least have the power of God in our favor if we CHOOSE to use it.

I'm not sure what the scriptural definition of gluttony is, but a common definition is "eating more than you need." If you don't exercise, you don't need as much food.

That's a pretty good article in the OP. Thanks for the link.

I think that hits the nail on the head for most folks.

I don't think occasional overeating is gluttony. Neither is a little extra weight a sign of gluttony. Gluttony is gross excess.

Stop it, your making me hungry :tongue3:

Food for the stomach and the stomach for food and God will destroy both!

Paul was just teaching about we need to keep things in place.

I love my food, and wine. He gives all things richly to enjoy!

You know what???? I'm gonna go out on a limb to say this---but(and its a big one)

Our "Baptist" overweight problem is not linked to "Buffet" covered dish eating at our fellowships---know what I mean----and you're not gonna go from wearing size 34 pants to wearing size 40 pants by eating Ice Cream instead of alcoholic beverages at a Baptist wedding reception----no sir---our problem is not eating together too much

    Our problem is

    Our problem is

    Our problem is

We've(all denominations and athiests combined) become a lazy generation of people. We have gone from hard work in the fields and factories---to sitting in front of computer screens all day type work. We don't burn off excess calories--thus those excess calories are stored as fat on our hips, behinds, and facial cheeks---get it!!!

Here's what you do to discredit the news source

Find yourself----say---100 fat people from the streets of New York, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle---weigh them--and then ask them what denomination(religion) they are----I can guarantee you--out of those 100 fat people you interview---maybe 5---maybe 5---maybe 5 will say they're Baptist

My point is---religion has nothing to do with being fat!!! Overeating and under exercizing does!!! Regardless of if you are Baptist, Methodist, Hindu---or if you just plain out just don't believe there's a God in Heaven above and a Devil in a hell below!!!

Gluttony has more to do with attitude than anything. It is taking more than you need so that another person doesn't have the chance at it. One can be a glutton over more than food.

Just because a person is overweight does not mean they are a glutton and overeat all the time. I am quite the opposite. I have done real damage to my system because rarely do I eat three meals a day. There are some days when I will only eat once a day during the week for whatever reason.

But then on the weekends and in the summers my wife wants us to eat three times a day so my matabolism freaks out :)

I agree that people from all walks of life are fat as well, but as Christians, if we know its sinful, should we not proactively fight it? Why is it pretty much never brought up? Our group should be fighting the norm and be below average in the gluttony department, not giving the media a reason to say otherwise.

I think you can be a glutton and not be fat....

We come in all shapes and sizes, gluttonly is real, its a condition, it can be remedied and usually does get put right. Its a stange one is gluttonly. I suffered from a eating disorder after my unwanted divorce.

    Its all in the head!

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!

"Gluttony" (and related words) is an interesting subject for a bible word study. Dust off the old Concordance or use www.blueletterbible.org.

Then try comparing with fatness (and related words) when used in a good sense.

On second thought, do get out the Strong's Concordance. Lifting an actual book is more exercise..... Strong's will make you stronger! ......UGH!

Oh...be sure to get out of the chair to get that book. Don't just roll the chair across the floor.

There are many things that can make one overweight. Going to church can be one of them.

Consider what many of us do on a Sunday morning. Many get up, rush around and don't eat breakfast. We go to church and don't eat anything until going out after church and eat at about 1 PM. (Okay, we may have had a dough nut [no protein] at church which is bad for you on an empty stomach). The point is we go without eating from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon.

If you go to weight watchers or any other good diet that promotes good eating habits, they will tell you to eat about six small good meals a day to lose weight. Skipping meals is not the way to lose weight. Skipping meals causes you to pig out when you do eat. Since our bodies are programmed to survive, it tells your body to store more food since you probably will not eat for another 10 or 12 hours.

So going to church can be a factor in gaining weight. When I lost 40 lbs. 7 years ago, I would eat a health food bar between Bible study and the church service to avoid skipping a meal. I have gained back about 10 lbs., so I should start doing that again because it is the healthy way to eat.

I have been told that on the WeightWatchers diet you can eat all of the string beans you want! Yum , I love those things. I can eat them raw. If it ever quits raining I can go pick a bucket full.

I hear alot of people say that overeating once every now and then is not gluttony. Well, I'm not saying that, but at the same time, I've heard this so often that I really think people are disillusioned about what "once every now and then" is. Overeating a little on a true "once every now and then" basis isn't what makes people overweight. If you are eating and exercising right in the first place, your metabolism should be able to burn right through that without so much as a blip on the radar. People get overweight by habitually overeating on a regular basis. And yes, I know that in some extreme cases genetics has a big role, but as a whole, for the average person, the reason for getting overweight is because they're eating too much, plain and simple. Eating too much is gluttony, and I think the bible says that gluttony is a sin... yet it seems to be an accepted vice in church, usually it's just pretty much ignored.

Well Corndogggy: I will have to flat out disagree with you on that. I think the real "sin" is lazyness. If you eat a normal amount for a human being and don't lift a finger all day you will get fat. Simple as that.

Yes, but you can also work your tail off and burn 3,500 calories a day, yet if you overeat regularly and consume 5,000 calories a day... you will get fat. Just because you work hard doesn't make you immune to the sin of gluttony.

The flip side of that is 24 hour mountain bike racers who can consume 12,000 to 14,000 calories per day and still lose weight due to burning so much.

Basically, whether you are lazy or not, the sin of gluttony in my opinion is simply eating alot more than what you need.

Yep, secular media will blame christians for anything and everything, and some people will listen to anything they say.
Everyone has to eat, don't families eat together, I know when I was growing up we all sat down at the table and ate together, when I raised my kids we all ate together. My church family is my family and it is good to sit down and eat together, just like any other family. We have one fellowship meal a month at our church and we enjoy it greatly time to sit around and talk to people. On Sundays we are in a hurry, got to get to class, got to get to worship, and then you don't chat in worship service, on Sundays we have a different purpose for being there.
Fact is, which was ignored by the article, is that baptists aren't the only ones over weight, and not all baptists are over weigh. Anything to make christians look bad I guess.

Medical information, are you a doctor? I happen to have hypothyroidism, which means easy to gain weight hard to loose weight. No matter what I eat or activity I do, which by the way, I am disabled with a bad back, theres a lot of activities I can not do.

I'm pretty sure I acknowledged that there are some medical situations in extreme circumstances that leads to obesity, but I really don't think that this is a widespread problem. 95% of the problem is that people simply eat way too much. Eating cheap nasty food has turned into a form of recreation.

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/08/29/obesity.state.ap/index.html

    "U.S. waistlines continue to grow"

"The gravy train -- make that the sausage, biscuits and gravy train -- just kept on rolling in most of America last year, with 31 states showing an increase in obesity."

What do I think of gluttony? It made me fat!
I used to be a glutton.... (horrible sounding word isn't it. right up there with morbidly obese!)
Anyway, I used to eat a lot about 15-20 yrs ago... got my body out of whack, and I am now paying for it. I've been trying to lose weight, but it is harder now that I am older. I have lost about 40 pounds in the last year and half though.
If you look at my two pictures above, you can see a difference.. the one on the right is from 4 yrs ago, the one on the left is 2 months ago.

I'm not a glutton now, havent been for about 15 yrs, but the pounds I put on then are still there.
