I work in a retail store and the flollowing happened last night right as we were closing.

A man came up with two jackets on of which didn't have a price tage. The man said that both were the same price. The jackets were similar, but not identical. I told the man I would have to look up the correct stock numbers to sell it to him. He didn't want to wait while I looked it up, and said he would just take the one jacket.

We rang up his purchase and he presented a check from xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxx Ministries, and he signed the check. Unfortunately our store policy does not allow us to take a check that does not have the name of the person signing the check imprinted on it. I explained this the the man and he said "I'm a Pastor and this is my ministry account. All of my expenses including my clothing and food come out of this account. I still couldn't take the check and the man became angry and walked out.

The xxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx Ministries was not a church name, and it was not a ministry I was familiar with. I find it strange that the "Pastor" would be the one signing the check, not a treasurer or a trustee, or someone else. And also I find it strange that "all" of his expenses would be paid out of this account.

What do you think? I hated to turn down a man of God, but there was too much that seemed out of the ordinary.

A man of God would have understood fully. You did the right thing in following store policy.

I shouldn't worry about it all.

    Cheers,

There are some churches that the Pastor can sign the check along with the treasurer, but you did the right thing for He as a Pastor should of went to the bank and got the money before coming to a store that did not know him. At least, I would.

The right thing to do was to obey your employer. But if you thought this guy was on the up-and-up, I guess you could have paid for the coats yourself and taken the check from him has reimbursement.

For many years a friend of mine was an owner of a Cible Bookstore and he told me that the worst to pay are pastors. In my days of being in business I have seen enough overdue account by churches. Most people in churches are not very good at business. I found that out once I started pastoring and the church told me how they did the accounts. I was shocked. Fortunately for the first one, an accountant friend of mine set them up well. The second did not listen, and the IRS sent me a bill for about $5,000. My accountant sent them a letter and the church was found at fault.

Years ago my brother-in-law was a police officer. One time he stopped a man for speeding who claimed he was a pastor. The pastor told him that God would get him because he stopped a pastor. My brother-in-law told the pastor that God would get him if he ran over a child.

Not all pastors are men of God.

Your brother-in-law should have told that 'pastor' , "Then you should know that God demands you obey magistrates and civil authorities".

As to the OP: You did the right thing. I don't know how various church accounts are handled. It doesn't matter one whit in this circumstance either. Your policy is what you ought to follow. that "misitry" doesn't sign your paycheck, your employer does. And in addition, I think the following would apply here:
    Col 3:22
Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye service, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
    Col 3:23
    And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
    Col 3:24
Knowing that of the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for you serve the Lord Christ.

Regardless of who it is. A pastor, the President of the US you are bound by company policy. To present a Christian witness that is pure you have to obey the policy of the company as long as it does not force you to disobey God's revealed will / The Bible.

    You did it correctly,

    Thanks for up holding integrity

    IN Christ

I agree, Bill. You did the right thing.

IMHO, a Pastor's clothes should come out of his personal savings account, not the church treasury.

Even if he was telling the truth, he was certainly lacking in grace...

Buying clothes out of a "ministry account" sounds fishy to me anyway.

Good call. (helps when your employer has your back too!)
