What Does "God Created Music" Mean?

Scripture More Accurately

Well-Known Member
Based on various conversations that I have had over the years with other professing believers, especially some very recent online conversations, I am interested in probing what people actually mean when they say, "God created music."

What does "God created music" mean and how do you support from Scripture what you think that statement means?

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the phrase.
It’s not supported by any specific Scripture.

I’d place the phrase among side statements like, “God created ice cream”.
Cute but stretching things a bit.

An aside, you should read the beginning of JRR Tolkien’s, “Silmarillion” where music plays a grand role in his creation mythology.

AINULINDALË
The Music of the Ainur
There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of the mind of Ilúvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony.

Are you familiar with the song, which was recorded by Barry Manilow, "I Write The Songs?"

The songwriter, Bruce Johnston, stated it was about the Holy Spirit, inspiring men to write music.

God created music as He created language. Language and music are sisters.

Yes, it is not supported explicitly by any specific Scripture. Many believers, however, make this statement, and it is foundational to most everything else that they believe about music.

"speak" and "sing" are parallel expressions of vocalizing (make melody is word 'psalm' and could refer to poetry or music)

God CREATED Adam with that ability, to communicate in Eden with God. Remember God "spoke" the worlds into existence, so language/verbal sounds is from Day One.

But, when people say that God created music, they are attempting to hallow every kind and form, because everything that God created is good, right?

God did create everything good, but He did not create everything incorruptible. Everything in our world can be corrupted. Only that which is begotten of God partakes of His incorrupt nature. Moral corruption is in the heart of man, and his communication can reflect that.

Yes, this statement is used by people to assert that their contemporary worship music is pleasing to God and acceptable to Him.

God did create everything good, but He did not create everything good to be used for whatever purposes humans might choose to use them.

It is not necessary to hold that only things that have been corrupted are unacceptable to God for certain uses. Something may have been created as good by God but never intended by Him to be used in certain ways.

It must be true, I READ it on the internet
I wonder how I'm able to READ your posts. The internet, perhaps?

Since I READ your posts on the internet, I suppose they must be true? Or should I assume they're not?

Thank you for pointing out the fact that I should doubt the veracity of what I READ on the internet.

I will READ your posts with the skeptical approach you embrace!
