    From the article:

[Woke] evolved into an all-encompassing term to describe leftist political ideology, used as a “shorthand for people on the left” to signal progressiveness….

That is essentially correct, though its evolution does not appear to involve much change.

The so-called “progressiveness” of the political left is not at all a positive thing for society.

Their “social justice” or “woke” ideology is a cancer that threatens to destroy America.

    Also from the article:

[The term woke] … [has been] weaponised by those on the right as a “sneering, jeering dismissive term” to denigrate those who did not agree with their beliefs, said Mr Thorne.

That is not quite true. Rather, many have realized the ultra destructive nature of "woke" ideology.

It is understandable that the Dem Progressive Left would like to distance themselves from its true meaning, because anyone with any sense can see that "woke" ideology is extremely detrimental to society.

Those who have managed to expose the truth and turn it against them deserve applause and support.

Those who are “woke” are a major part of the problem. Those pushing “woke” ideology are far worse.
They both denigrate themselves by embracing it.

Woke means that you accept America and white people in particular are the fault of everything bad in the world and the current generations need to work to right the wrongs of the past, and punish those who don't conform.

Here's a 6-minute clip related to the topic (features Victor Davis Hanson).

Hanson on woke agenda: 'Top-down movement' organized by 'largely wealthy people'
Hoover Institution senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson discusses op-ed that calls out the Democratic Party as 'the party of wealth,' suggesting Republicans need to make the argument that they're 'the party of the middle class.'
