I'm listening to the news as I am cleaning out my back room full of old books. (Now I'm taking a break.) The television set in my den is giving me the "hear ye! hear ye!" version of the divorce settlement of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Why am I supposed to care? What is it that we are supposed to be celebrating in the lives of "celebrities"? Why is this news?

....Because, we, the people, make it news, as if we had nothing better to do.

    Cheers,

Celebrity worship is an American form of idolatry. Since we don't have 'official' royalty or nobility, that is the de facto form which consumes so much of the news media and the depth of interest which should to go more important and wholesome topics.

I don't read anything about celebrities--except about the death of actors that I liked as I was growing up. I couldn't care less about their petty problems, divorce, or anything else about their lives. I watch TV to kill time and get away from reality for a while. I do NOT idolize celebrities when the only difference between them and me is that they are wealthy by the world's standards, and they are more than likely poor by God's standards.

How many wealthy people (no matter who they are) are born again and know Jesus Christ as their Saviour? How many of them show that fact in their lives? I'd be willing to bet that it is a very small number since people of great wealth put their trust in that wealth and not in Jesus Christ.

I have been watching that story in the news. It interests me because religion is being brought up as the driving force behind what is happening.

I don't know that I could name anything either of them are in, but that caught my eye. I'm sure I've probably seen a movie or something and I remember girls swooning over Cruise (never got that but I'm not a swooner, lol) but ah well, I'm just not a celeb type.

Reading about them on occasion is interesting though. Shows that money doesn't buy happiness or help make for a stable home. The divorce rate seems the same as or even higher than those that are considered "at high risk" because of poverty and other things people like to blame the degradation of marriage on.

But...this is one I'll keep reading stories on. I want to see if anymore things are said about Scientology and how it really works. It's not something I have much knowledge about...figured it was some little fad thing designed for rich folks to join and be able to call themselves religious, but sounds like there's a whole lot more to it than that. If what is being said is true, than I'm glad the little girl is possibly being kept from it. Well, I'm glad anyhow since truth is truth and a lie is a lie, but it seems it would be harder to keep your kid from it if your spouse is rich and famous. Sounds like she is too, but maybe not as much? I don't know. I've heard of Cruise, haven't heard of her, so based on my limited knowledge, it does seem surprising that she appears to be successful in what appears to be a mission to keep her kiddo out of Scientology.

It never ceases to amaze me - in a good way - how sometimes a woman's outlook on the world will change once she has a child and that her child is exposed to that same world that she once ignored or participated in.

As someone who has been there, done that, I entirely agree. It's amazing what complete responsibility for a helpless human will do to make one change their views!
