What in the world does this verse mean?

PTW - Picture me dipping my big toe in the water to see what kind of shock awaits me when I dive in. But, being I am who I am and hardly prone to timidity, I'll give you my opinion. One must be careful here to get into the meaning of the scripture immediately preceding this verse.

I'll address mankind - not men or women individually. During these times mentioned here they will clamor for information, being curious about spiritual things and will feel as though they are "ever learning" but they are missing, or are not really understanding true salvation.

I'm real hesitant to answer an untouched post that has some age on it. When you can, give us your thoughts because I'm all for "ever learning!"

1. The passage is talking about the end of times, and in these times it seems that education is more important than salvation.
Education without salvation is damnation.

2. Personally, I think it also has to do with everyone trying to read versions of the bible, studying greek and whatever else they can, but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, and that truth is the King James Bible. Please don't debate my second opinion, as we know they're is no use.

Some new notion and practice or another: and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth; partly because of the teachers, which they heap up to themselves, who are unapt to teach, are blind and ignorant guides, and know not the truth, but are enemies to it, and resist it; and partly because of themselves, the sins they are laden, and the lusts they are led away with, which hinder them from coming to the knowledge of the truth.

 

it means what it says,look at the world ever learning,secular education,never able to come to
the truth,leaving God out.

The KJV-only nonsense that infects so much of Baptist Fundamentalism has nothing to do with the text in question, period, end of story. This is an example of eisegesis - reading one's presuppositions into the text (also all too often a Fundamentalist pathology).

If you don't want your ridiculous and false bibliology to be disputed, you have two choices:

• prove KJV-onlyism from Scripture (the only source of theological truth that matters) and shut the mouths of us critics</font>
• keep it to yourself</font>

 

The text is referring to conceited men (cf. 3:4) who are in love with gathering knowledge - whether it be some new novelty, the latest intellectual fad, whatever. Nonetheless, all their knowledge is not bringing them any closer to true, lasting knowledge - the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As the next verse says, they are in fact opposed to the truth that will save.

For some reason, men like the Jesus Seminar come to mind.

 

I think that it means we will continue to learn and will never know or understand everything until God reveals it to us. Maybe and probably after death.

"We" will continue? The verse is a warning against apostates.

 

Take into consideration the whole context. 7 is most certainly a continuation of 6 which is a continuation of 1-5.

People are hungry for spirituality...but have forgotten where it comes from. That is what this verse means to me. They are ever learning...but not getting to the truth. Look at the "New-Age" religions (which aren't new at all by the way) How many perversions of religion are there that have little to nothing to do with God? The people are hungry...but would rather eat the plate than the food...why is that? End times.
