    What is a conservative?
What platform must you take to be considered as such.
How much leeway may be allowed ?
(For example - a candidate may say he is against abortiong - but would allow in cases of incest, or life of mother)

So What issues are mandatory to be considered a conservative?

This is what has been posted so far (in order of posting):

    1. Non Deficit Spending
    2. Constitution to be interpreted by original intent
    3. Small Govt and at the lowest reasonabl leve ( National, State, County, town...)
    4. Low taxes
    5. Taxes not to be used for redistribution
    6. No Income tax

    OK, I'll start.

    1. Non-deficit spending. Any conservative should run a government with a balanced budget, preferably with a budget surplus. For now that means across the board spending cuts, yes, even the military. Exceptions would be in times of war.

Actually this morning is the first time I have seen this thread. Not sure what you think it is "telling".

The constitution must be interpreted by its original intent.

Against activist judges which are defined as those who interpret the constitution any way other than its original intent.

Small government which means we keep control and governance as local as possible. There are some things that need to be handled at the state level and there are some things that should be handled at the Fed level. All governments at any level should be as small as possible.

Seems natural since there are no conservatives running for president from the major parties that this thread would get few responses. No indictment of you, Rev.

Related to small government--taxation should be low and not used as a means of redistribution of wealth to address perceived social needs.

No income tax. Not a conservative principle.

Lets keep the intent of the OP - simply list Conservative principals - If you wish to have a commentary, feel free to start a new thread.

You gave it as an example Salty, I simply disagreed.

"(For example - a candidate may say he is against abortiong - but would allow in cases of incest, or life of mother) ".

    HankD

    Moderators note:
If you read the entire paragaph the I was speaking of "How much leeway would you allow"
I was not speaking only of abortion - but any platform in general"

This is actually the best answer. A conservative would be one who resists change.

In American politics, it means just what Rev said and more. It means resisting policies that limit an individual's right to life, liberty and property.

A conservative is more interested in freedom than they are "fairness".

My list of agreements with statements voicing disagreement or enhancements thereof:

Our allies must be treated as friends, not put on par with our sworn enemies.

We must reaffirm that American laws are the only laws used in American Courts.

Congress must compel localities that shelter illegals to enforce immigration laws by cutting federal funds and imposing fines on sanctuary cities and states (Disagree – The concept of sanctuary cities and states must cease up to and including the level of federal law legislation).

A security wall on our border with Mexico must be constructed with stronger surveillance at every possible entry into our country.

Smaller government. The Conservative Party believes that government involvement in micromanaging every aspect of business must be rejected.

Congress can and should defy the Supreme Court when it wanders into areas where it has no constitutional authority (issue – who defines “constitutional authority?”).

Religious liberty must be maintained in our homes, in our businesses and in our public square.

The Conservative Party believes our schools must return to teaching American history and American values.

The Conservative Party believes it is time to close the Department of Education and return all educational responsibilities to the state and local level. We also advocate competition in education through vouchers, tax credits and school choice. I would allow some federal control to watchdog for "hate" training in disguise as "religious education" due to federal sensitivity to hate information.

The Conservative Party supports those who uphold the Constitution’s protection of the right for law-abiding citizens to own firearms.

We must rediscover the principles that include the dominance of the Rule of Law (especially within the functioning of the administration).

The America people must reverse Roe vs. Wade and abolish abortion at both the state and federal level.

Interesting thread. And I don't think we need to confuse political conservatism with Biblical conservatism. They aren't the same no matter what the GOP wants folks to believe.
