What is our primary purpose

Over in another group that I am a member of, we have gotten onto the topic of what is out #1 priority as Christians. So far, we have one side saying that glorifying God is #1 and another side saying that the great commission is. I was curious as to what you all felt about this topic.

Glorifying God is, and one of the ways we glorify God is by fulfilling His commission.

I would have to say it is to live for God and all that He requires. Whether it be a light in a dark world or take care of the needy or stay at home and raise godly children.

Before we were saved, we lived for ourselves. Once we accept the shed blood of Christ that bought us, we are obligated to live for Him.

Paul said it right... I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. I strive to live a Christlike life... In doing this, I will glorify God, and as a result, I will do the great commission because people will see that I have something about me that they want to know more about. The bottom line is that we need to become more transparant and let the Light of Christ shine through us.

Amen. My primary purpose as a Christian is to die to self so Christ can live in me, expressing HIMself to the world through me.

This glorifies God.
This results in care for others.
This obeys His laws.

To love God and love our neighbors.

If we truly do this, then everything else we are called to do flows out of it.

If we don't do this, then everything we do is outside of His will and is almost certainly opposed to God's purposes.

Living 100% by the faith He has given me. This glorifies His Name and is the only thing that "pleases" Him.

Those who put "works" (good things like evangelism, missions, godly living) first are sadly misled in the flesh.

It seems to me that we should use the bible to answer this question. Solomon summerized our duty in Eccles 12 when he said,

"Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Nothing about evangelism there. Paul took a similar idea in I Cor 10:31 "...whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God." The problem that comes when we make any of our biblical duties the main focus it becomes works and can become a matter or pride.
