What makes a Baptist a Baptist

What makes a Baptist a Baptist

Baptism is an outward projection of the belief in Christ and to show the death of your old life and the beginning of your new life in Christ.
I believe that baptism doesnt save you nor send you to heaven nor does it cleanse your sins only Christ forgives sin. I thought thats what everyone believes if they're Christian.

Not only that but this forum is for Baptist Christian denoms why not allow websites that are Christian does BB feel that only the baptist belief is right ?

Or is it safe to say that doctrine causes division among Christians and that if its bad its not Godly.....Oh I may have hit a cord there with that comment....God is not the author of Confusion.

Lets remember John 3:16

If you believe John 3:16 then your going to heaven no if's and's or but's about it....everything else you do after that is icing on the cake......

Mans idea of Doctrine has been seperating Christians from Christians for to long and its sad when you cant get 2 Christians even in the same denomination to agree and we wonder why people are lost and without Christ. We wonder why our churches aren't growing, We wonder why priest molest children, Why preachers have affairs with choir members, and why our youth are left with a distaste for the Word of God...Doctrine isnt bad. True doctrine is the Word of God not pieces of it but the whole Word

We cant even agree on The Word of God and that isnt Godly now is it. There is only one interpreter of the Word and thats the Holy Spirit.

Some Baptist believe you must be baptized to be saved....Where does the Word say that

Some Pentacostal services the whole church speaks in tounges at once the Word teaches that only 3 at the most and only with and interpreter.

Catholics believe that suicide sends you to hell.
The Bible doesnt say that in no way shape or form.

Now I'll ask you is this mans doctrine or Bible doctrine based belief......We make assumptions when we should not.

Why cant we all just be Christians.

I agree we do make many assumptions without Biblical basis. That's why I feel it's better to not argue my own belief but instead only point out truth in the Bible. It makes for a much nicer place.

The New Testament does say Baptism is by immersion (or dipping). Many other denoms don't practice that. I think that's where the debate gets heated. How can you argue with the Bible though?

Dear Brother Lowery,
As your profile lists your denomination to be Christian, I am moving this and your other discussion topic to the Other denoms forum.

Do you realize you are using baiting tactics in each of your topics?

The problem is that most people point out the truth in the Bible as they see it, not what the bible really says.

The Bible names only God as reverend, you might consider that when you are getting back to the basics.

Seriously brother, I don't understand your point. I don't know any Baptist who I consider a real Baptist who believes anything more than that a truly regenerated child of God will be obedient to beleiver's baptism.

To state more is unBiblical.

As far the the Pentecostals, they are only adding confusion on top of confusion.

the Bible also states clearly that the Spirit gifts such as tongues, healing, ended with the Apostolic age.

Just some of my thoughts.

Also, I disagree with your statement regarding John 3:16.

We are no where commanded to repent and believe in scripture, per se. We are commanded to have only Christ as the object of our hope and faith, Christ Alone.

May God Bless,
Bro. Dallas

I'm curious which Baptists believe you must be baptized to be saved.

Dear Brother rlvaughn,
Although they deny it, some landmark baptists are certainly beginning to sound like baptismal regenerationists.

Baptists are typically accepting of the Bible truth about believer's baptism by immersion and also trinitarian "usually" and many of them accept the 66 books of the Bible (not just the 27 of the NT (or as some would have it -- the 23 of the NT).

Baptists often split up views along Calvinist vs Arminian lines - with both being in the same congregation. You can often find Baptists who are serious about the Bible as the Word of God and who literally believe God's "Account" of Creation.

So I am more comfortable in the Baptist boar context than in a Lutheran or Presbyterian board (for example).

Church of Christ and Catholics tend to be more committed to "baptismal regernation" than Baptists.

Anyone else?

"What makes a Baptist a Baptist?"

Nothing, since one is not a Baptist until one is a Baptist.

Dont forget that the term "Baptist" was a name attached to Bible believing Christians by their opposers. They "re-baptized" (ana-baptist) those who were baptized as babies after they acceptd Christ (believers baptism, an Infant cant believe)
and were called "ana-baptists" by the Catholics and the Protestants. Which is also why most Baptists dont consider themselves Protestants. They were persecuted by the Protestants (Zwingli)
just as much as the Catholics. So a Baptist is one who mainly belives in biblical authority (sola scriptura) even though they may not use the title "baptist".

Frogman,

bmerr here. This comment was interesting.

Where are we commanded this? you may check out Acts 17:30, too.

I dont know whether I can join the discussion in this room, but I'm writing to tell you that I was re-baptized. I was born in an Anglican church and was christened [I dont know whether water was sprinkled on me or poured on me; I was just an infant then!], and I was confirmed by an Anglican bishop.

But years later, I came to know Christ and Him crucified. I took baptism as an adult [total immersion]. Does that make me an Anabaptist?

It's very sad that people tend to focus on doctrine and not on Christ [the living and true God]. The Pentecostals say I must speak in tongues, the Baptists say I must be baptized, somebody else says 'KJV Bible' only, and someone else says, 'Wear only white' - and there are those who practice Lent and still others who say you must be circumcised [like the Galatians!]. Dont we realize that Christ, and Christ alone, is enough! And we know Him through the Word [Sola Scriptura, 66 books - enough]! And the Holy Spirit [with the stress on 'holy']...I've said enough!!

procyon,

bmerr here. Paul said in 2 Tim 4:16,

"Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

Sounds like doctrine is important, huh?
