What makes a State Red or Blue?

I am pretty sure the Red and Blue of the States is computer generated (that was a double entente).

 

I think you are correct. I believe one of the networks, years ago, started marking the wins with the red/blue labels to show which pres candidates had won the state.

It was arbitrary, however, “red” is an aggressive color that could invoke fear and blue is “mild” and comforting.

It just stuck.

edit; purple means the state can go either way… sort of a moderate populous.
