"What must I do to be saved?"

Jesus answered this question several different ways, indicating that the summation of thought is required.

    1) "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:16) Note: The absence of baptize in the "whoever does not believe" second part is easily explained. When one experiences the right kind of belief, they are immediately baptized by the Holy Spirit (not physical water immersion baptism) and their salvation is complete, never to be lost. But "whoever does not believe" never receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit, so whether they receive physical baptism (immersion) or not, they are not saved.

    2) I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. (John 10:9) Belief in Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God is the only way of being "saved" from sin and hell and receiving eternal life.

    3) "All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved." (Mark 13:13) Endurance does not produce salvation; it is Spirit-empowered perseverance and proof of the reality of salvation in the one who endures.

"that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10)

Confession "with your mouth" refers to prayer to God, not public confession. That is part of the act of obedience of water baptism, a public profession of faith, the purpose of which is to edify believers and witness to non-believers.

"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

" . . . continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose." (put into action God's saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.) (Phil 2:12b-13)

It cannot refer to salvation by works, but it does refer to the believer's responsibility for active pursuit of obedience in the process of sanctification. "fear and trembling" - The attitude with which Christians are to pursue their sanctification. It involves a healthy fear of offending God and a righteous awe and respect for Him. God energizes both the believer's desires and his actions. The Gr. word for "will" indicates that He is not focusing on mere desires or whimsical emotions but on the studied intent to fulfill a planned purpose. God's power makes His church willing to live godly lives.

And a reminder, lest some take the words I DO and imply a means of "works" -

"Salvation is of the Lord". It is 100% the work of God. The Father chose, the Son purchased and the Spirit regenerates and gives the repentance and faith needed so that I, as a human may "believe" or "call on the Lord".

It is ALL the work of God and none of man. This must be part of our rhetoric on "What must I DO to be saved" or it might lead to other errors.

< Do you have any additional insights into times that Jesus really didn't mean what He said, or know of other verses that we should get rid of to make the gospel message clearer? >

A better question may be: Do you speak with other tongues, cast out demons, heal the sick by laying your hands on them, pick up serpents, and drink poison and remain unharmed? Mark 16 says these are the signS of those who believe. Do you display these signS, or are you not among those who believe?... or is there a reasonable doubt as the authenticity of Mark 16:9-20?

Are you attempting to say that baptism is necessary for salvation? Are you a Church of Christ/Campbellite interloper?

1..2..3... This has been answered numerous times in several forums. Mk 16:9-20 was fulfilled throughout the first century ministry, as described in the book of Acts.

    Actually,

He has already revealed that he is a Catholic in an earlier post that was deleted due to ugliness toward Baptists.

    Dr.Bob,
I agree with you that salvation is 100 percent the work of God.

That leaves baptism without any power to condemn or save.

But do you not agree that baptism has a promise that through our faith to do what the Holy Spirit commanded,we are to be given a free gift. All we do in baptism is obey or submit to the advice of the Holy spirit.

Is it not necessary to receive the free gift?
God bless,Charles (I hope campbellites are allowed on this forum).

#1 - This Forum is for Baptists and those who are members of churches that are "baptistic" (similar in doctrine, though maybe not in name)

#2 - No works means no works. Baptism is a good work, right? Obedience? Then is can have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with salvation.

    Brother Bob,
Sorry to have invaded your space.
I can agree with you that baptism has nothing to do with salvation, but it does seem necessary to me to receive the promise of the free gift.Only after accepting Jesus as Lord.
I respect your zeal for our Lord but surely all Baptists do not see as you do about baptism.
    God bless,Charles

It is a sign, an ordinance of obedience. Not a means of grace. Not a means of receiving eternal life or the holy spirit.

They would not be "baptists" per se and follow such teaching. They'd be at the Church of Christ or some other Campbellite sect.

    Chris,
Salvation is not a reward for something we have done,it is a free gift from God(Eph2:8).

    However,it is accessed by faith(Romans5:2).

This establishes the necessity of faith in Christ as the only means of accessing this salvation. Our confession and accepting Jesus as Lord is only an access to grace(Romans10:9-10).Our repentance and baptism is only a way to access grace(Acts2:38).

Our acts of faith in confessing, accepting Jesus as Lord, repenting, and being baptised are only acts of obedience. No reason to boast.

But don't leave one off.Who cares at what point God saves us,just do all he asked to make it happen.
    God bless,Charles
