What Version of the Bible...?

I usually use the NIV or TNIV and I run into NIV, KJV, and NLT mostly.

 

As a non-pastor I always use a translation that differs from the preacher's version . It's good for me to note the variations and yet the same basic flow . That's my style .

I can still be 'on the same page' in some sense . It causes me to pay attention with a hightened degree of interest . I would suggest that others try out my 'unorthodox approach' sometimes , if not regularly .

In churches which used the NIV I usually read along with my MLB and was perfectly happy to do so .

 

But even that would not necessarily mean you were all on the same page. As a help to anyone not knowing their way around the bible, we always announce the page number, in the pew bibles, of the reading(s). Unless the reading is in Genesis 1, that page number is different to the one in my bible, even though both are NKJV. Everyone would have to be using the same edition. Or were you using the phrase "on the same page" metaphorically?

 

I use the NASB, but we have plenty of KJV's and NIV in the congregation. I would like to have everyone in the same translation, but that probably won't happen.

 

I use the TNIV, but have seen NRSV, NIV, KJV, NKJV, The Message and HCSB. Folks are coming around to my prefered choice. I first bought church bibles that are TNIV, Then whenever I give a bible away it is TNIV. Finally I am continually looking for deals on TNIV bibles. If I find a screaming deal I buy and either give it away or sell them real cheap. Example found some hard-back, large print bibles for 3.99 (4.99 with shipping) regularly 14.99, bought a case and sold for 5 dollars each.

 

I preach from the KJV, for study preparing my sermon and bible study lessons I use KJV and NASB, as well as occasionally referencing other versions online. In the congregation I know people use KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB and I don't know what else.

Personally when I am listening to a sermon I find it difficult to follow along with a different version than what I am using. I don't have too much trouble following KJV to NKJV, but if I have my KJV and the preacher is using NIV I get lost easily. It makes sense to me for pew bibles to be the same version as the the preacher uses, that way people like me can always follow along. It having a different version doesn't bother you then use your own bible.

We have all different versions in our church, but I would say the majority are either NIV or NAS with a few KJVs floating around.

HCSB, NIV, NKJV here...

 

As a non-pastor I had been using the NASB most of the time but as of the past 3 months I have been using the KJV along with my NASB. When my 11 Y/O Son
comes over to visit he uses the NIV & the NLT to have our little Bible reading time.

 

I preach from the KJV, with references to the NIV when the KJV needs explained better...
We have KJV, NIV, NLT, NKJV, amplified, and one older lady brings her Living bible...

No confusion here... actually, our Bible Studies go deep, and the different versions read together brings better light on a passage than just one version would.

During Bible Study, I put e-sword on the wall, and I have 37 different versions available at that time... so when someone reads a verse from their Bible, all I have to do is click on that version on e-sword, and the whole church can read along.

 

I really like that last paragraph! What an interesting idea.

 

TinyTim - no confusion in our church either. The multiple translations do bring a fuller understanding of what the passage means.

 

In the OT sometimes there can actually be confusion because translating Hebrew is so difficult (the same few letters can be read in so many different ways).

Here is something to try. In your worship service why not have 3 to 4 versions of Amazing Grace or what ever you sing. The piano could have a fast version, the song leader a slow version the quire a version the congregation several versions. Now sing out loud...really loud..:BangHead: What happened to unity?

Red herring. Singing polyphonic hymns and God's Word are two different issues.

Psalm 133:1 has nothing to do with Bible versions. If it had to do with the KJV it would have said so.

Finally...so, you are able to determine that folks that don't read the KJV don't memorize the word of God? Interesting...I guess we're screwing up by having our kids memorize Scripture then. Sorry to mess up your pre-judgement.

 

Funny stuff - unity is now somehow something that comes from a bible version rather then a submissive human spirit and the moving of the Holy Spirit.

 

I preach from the NASB. Right now, for my personal Bible reading, I'm using The Message.
