    Research on twins supports 'God gene'
    By Jonathan Petre, Religion Correspondent
    (Filed: 22/03/2005)

    Religious belief is in the genes and can literally be inherited from one's parents, according to new research.

    While environmental factors were the largest influences on children, genetic make-up played a significant part in whether people continued to believe into adulthood, it found.

    What happens if you have this gene and your parents are unchurched?

    Did it say whether it was dominant or recessive?

    All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

    I'm not threatened by this type of research.

    Genes may influence behaviour and choices but they do not dictate behaviour and choice. As Christians we believe that our nature is inherently sinful. But Christ and the Holy Spirit can help us overcome our sinful nature.

    So even if we have genes that may predispose us towards or against spirituality, the awesome power of the Holy Spirit can overcome any of our natural predispositions.

    I'm not threatened by it either.

    I just think it's stupid and I resent my tax money being spent on this foolishness!

    I guess it isn't the most ground-breaking type of research and doesn't appear to engage any major societal problems, but I don't think it is foolishness. The interaction between genetics and behaviour is an important area of study now as the results of the Human Genome Project start becoming more useful to scientists. This type of research can be seen as part of that. If it doesn't contribute to that goal, other research will take priority.

    Why are we so afraid of discovering how our wonderful Creator made us?

    I'm not afraid at all and I do support research; but a 'spiritual' gene? Come onnnnnnnnnnnn.

    While there should be ethical boundaries to judge whether a certain type of research should be done or not, I see no problem in this case.

    If it is found to be bogus, the research will be abandoned. If science wasn't done because of the incredulity of the hypothesis, there would be very little science actually conducted.

    So what is the mystery?

    God created us, so why wouldn't there be evidence of His "fingerprint"?

    About they who may not have the gene;
    perhaps it is because they are of a line of descent who long ago God gave them up to reprobate minds.

    Anyhow, it is all speculation, at best. Fun to consider, but unprofitable for the Kingdom Of God.

    In HIS service;
    Jim
