When does modern start?

I don't understand the question. Modern what?

Maybe I'm too old to understand what modern is.

 

When did the thigns we consider modern start. Was it in the 80's, 90's 2000's what time frame did old fashion things become old fashioned.

EG. Music when did modern music become modern? When did what we consider old fashioned become old fashioned? What year did this change in our culture occur?


I suppose if you have taken or remember a humanities class the concept would be more clearer.

 

Your question is confusing. If you are talking about "modern" as opposed to "postmodern" I think you would start with the philosophy that began with Kant, Schleiermacher, et. al. That would begin about 1800. Theological modernism or liberalism was fomenting from Baruch Spinoza forward (1650). It burst on the scene with the Graf-Wellhausen theory of the authorship of the Pentateuch and Darwin's Origin of the Species. That all emerged about 1860.

Modern philosophy posited that there is absolute truth in the world and man can discern it without any outside help - thus the denial of the Bible as divine revelation and reducing it to the man-made record of the evolution of human religious thinking. Both modern philosophy and modernism as a theological system are rooted in evolutionary theory.

Postmodernism arose because of mankind's failure to discover truth on his own and thus order his world. Simplified, postmodernism denies that there are any absolutes and that there is any such thing as fixed, objective truth.

If you are looking for something else, you need to clarify what you mean.

 

I take it to mean the decline of our culture and that would be when television came into most every home (early 1950"s) and when rock and roll music entered the mainstream (late 1950's). Everything after that--the drug culture, the sexual revolution, vulgar language used openly, etc.--has been built on these two phenomena. The irony is that I like TV and I also like the old fashioned rock and roll but these things definitely led to more pernicious inroads into what was formerly a mostly Christian culture.

 

Modern starts immediately before your most distant memory. I'll give you an example. When I was a small boy I was an acolyte in a Methodist church. It's kinda like an altar boy. The acolytes used to carry these brass torches ahead of the choir procession to light the candles on the altar. In my current church we don't use candles for any occasion. Non-use of candles is modern. Non-use of acolytes must be modern, too. We don't have a choir. We have two to four vocalist to lead the singing. That, too, is modern. We don't have a processional. In our modern vein, we just walk to the front and take our places.

In my youth, an acolyte spent part of his Saturday folding the Sunday bulletin. We don't have bulletins. We use PowerPoint and the web. We're modern. What did you expect.

My Mama told me when she was a little girl she went to a Primitive Methodist church where the womenfolk sat to one side and always wore a hat with a veil and gloves. Later on she went to the same church where her Daddy got saved and they must have been modern. Women folk could sit with their families and you could take your gloves off once inside.

 

When does "modern" start?

The early 1900's and probably solidly ended by the 1980's.

The OP is too vague.

If we're talking history, the Modern Era is the era which came after the Middle Ages.

If we're talking music, the Modern Era would generally be considered music that came after the Romantic era (1820-1900). That includes the works of of Debussy, Ravel, Copeland, Stravinsky, and Shostakovich.

If we're talking Architecture, we're usually referring to styles after art-nouveau (c1914), which includes numerous architectural styles.

If we're talking art, we're usually referring to styles that followed post-impressionism (c1850's).

You have a good point. What are we talking about? Modern waht?

 

It seems that language and ideas change so rapidly (especially among the very young) that every decade is different from the last one. Too many churches try so hard to lure the lost that they compromise with the world and bring in rock music and allow many things that Bible-believing, Bible-teaching churches of old would abhore.

 

I know one thing that isn't modern, and that is Ann. You did not have a box to check that said "prehistoric" or later.
