These 'silent" centuries were a period when no inspired men wrote scripture. That does not mean God was absent nor silent. A lot when on during those years. The Persians came and went followed by Alexander the Great and the Greek period. The Maccabees ruled for almost 100 years ushering significant changes to the power and position of those in the Temple. And then there were the Romans.

Look at the end of Malachi. God was giving some preparation warnings.

God was telling them what was to come.

    • For those who feared Him, it was all going to be good.
    • But they had to hang on to the law of Moses and be obedient.
    • And He was going to send Elijah back (John the Baptist) to turn people's hearts.
And while the people waited - with the priests still burning the incense and waiting for God's movement - God was preparing the world for that great time of Christ's birth and the gospel.

Lots of things on the world's stage, so to speak, had to be readied: a common language that many understood (Koine Greek) along with their native language, the "peace" of Rome or the ability for the gospel to spread, and the rise and spread of the synagogue - which sparked an interest in Judaism and opened the way for the gospel to get a foothold in people's lives.

It wasn't that God was speaking to no man or woman. He was making global preparations for His Son to be ushered into the world.

He had said enough. The people had everything they needed to know.

Then one day, a wild man wearing a camel's coat munching on some locusts came to town with a very important message from Almighty God... .....
