When was the first sacrifice?

    This is probably going to be a dumb sounding question to most of you, but I have wondered about it for a while. In Gen. 3:21, where did the skins come from that God made the coats for Adam and Eve with? I have heard someone's opinion that maybe a sacrifice was made after they sinned, and that could be where the skins came from. I see that many of you are very knowledgeable, and would value some input on this.

    Hi Jessie,

    I think that is the common interpretation, yes. Since the word is 'skins' we have a choice:

    1. Adam and Eve did not have skins before they sinned (that thought is rather gruesome, eh?)

    2. God provided other skins, which means something else lost its life. Since Adam and Eve were the only people, it had to be one or more animals which were killed by God to provide those skins.

    Thus, the first sacrifice and the last (Jesus) were both by God.

    I hadn't connect them like Helen, that the first and last sacrifices were by God. But, yes there had to be an animal sacrifice, becasue of their sin, in order to cover them I notice that God was the one covering them, did God see them as naked and shameful? I don't think so, I think He was demonstrating to them that what they had done was major and costly, and it also fortells of the final sacrifice of God's own Son for their sin.
    But then thats just me.

    The first sacrifice was before the Garden and the sin! It was a Lamb slain from the foundation of the world--the skins(coverings) that God provided were a picture of that comin' Lamb!! Jesus has you covered, my dear saved person!
