Where Do You Worship?

Our church is brick, and now that you ask, I realize that I like to see brick and stone churches the best. And lots of stained-glass windows! We have 9 that I know of - gorgeous to my eyes - but I haven't seen all the buildings yet.

Our sanctuary is carpeted in a dusty pink, with pew cushions to match. Very light and unobtrusive. Four classy matching pink upholstered wing chairs for the ministers. I suppose what I like the least (though it isn't a complaint) is that the entrance to the sanctuary does not face the road. No big double doors and steps leading up to them. We have a pretty steeple, though!

Improvements? In the hallway outide the sanctuary, I'd like to see more chairs/couches. As a person who has battled panic attacks and claustrophobia for more than 6 years, I feel better knowing there's a nearby spot that the fearful can escape to, when necessary. I don't sit in the back for no reason, ya know! And I haven't needed to escape since I joined the church.

Brother Glen, when you start a topic about what we might like to change about the actual worship service, then I'll really have something to say!

Glad you asked Brother Glen! Go to the link I am providing, enter the site and you will see a picture of the front of the building along with a historic road sign. Find the link on that homepage to "a pictoral tour" and I have a few more images. I have more in the hard drive that I have not loaded yet. I will certainly get back to you when I do!

History of the Church
As the hot North Carolina summer of 1978 faded into the reds and yellows of autumn, twelve families gathered together to follow a vision given by the Lord. Today, with more than 3,000 members, Providence Baptist Church continues to follow that vision.

After holding services in those early years at a local elementary school, Providence moved two more times within the Raleigh, North Carolina area, before finding their current home---the old Crown Royale Hotel. The hotel, which had just undergone major improvements then went bankrupt, had a convention hall (now the Worship Center), a smaller amphitheater, a restaurant, two commercial-quality kitchens, small meeting rooms, and more than 300 guest rooms.

After church members spent four months sorting linens, moving mattresses, doing construction work, and cleaning hundreds of bathrooms, the first worship service was held in January 1992.

The church that had outgrown three meeting places had found a new home and given life to an old hotel. It had begun as an idea over dinner in 1978 and took the name Providence as a promise and a vision from the Lord, and He has blessed it. We continue to thank and praise Him for His Providence.

Here is one of the churches in our association, Pond Mountain, organized in 1881


This building is the highest elevation church east of the Mississippi River.

And Another is Rush Creek, organized in 1812. This is their original and only structure, still in use.



And a third one is Tumbling Creek, Saltville, Virginia, organized in 1821.

Our church is a red brick building with four white Doric columns out front and a tall white steeple. We also have a 3-story educational building attached to the back of the sanctuary.

Inside, we have a 6-foot wide center aisle leading to a raised lower platform and then an upper, divided chancel. The choir sit behind the pulpit-altar-lectern, with the clergy/liturgists on either side along the walls of the apse. The organist is in the center of the choir loft, with his back to the congregation. The baptistry is centered behind the choir with a tall stained-glass window behind it.

We just rennovated and took out all the carpet (the acoustic improvement is incredible).

Our church is brick, the present building was built in the 60's, becaue of growth they couldn't fit in the old building. We've been on this spot since the 1890's. We have a large auditorium, the walls are about 30 feet high. We had a fire a few years ago, so the carpet and padding on the pew is all new, blues. Our walls are off white, and we have a lot of old wood work it is all white. We have tall arched windows, a textures yellowish color glass. The stage/pulpit area is 3 steps high., we have ashoir loft that will seat abot 40. The halll out side has new tiles on it(old one were water damaged), someone gave us this really beautiful cabinet in which we have a bbible given to the church in 1880 something, and the very firt Lord's Supper set, which was also give to the church in 1880 something. All improvements on this part of the building have been done. All except, some of wish we could replace those yellow glass windoe panes. Out front there are some large two story coloums. We are the biggest building in Horse Cave. Our pastor said people call up the big baptist church. He says we need to live some big lives in Christ so they can see what we're all about,that God makes a difference, that the people inside the big building aren't what they expect us to be, that we can't be judged by the size of the building.
The rest of the building is behind the the auditorium part of the building. It is two floors, which we think of as three as we have a full basement. The top floor is the smallest, and is the childrens dept. The second floor has the pastors office and the little library, 5 Sunday school room, and then in the other wing you minght call it, it's whats lift of the last building that was on that spot, there are about 7 more Sunday school pooms, all preshcool and nursery. Then the basement, under the auditorium id the fellowship hall and the kitchen, we have a new kitchen. There are 3 Sunday school rooms(actually 2 more that are storage) the third of these is our class. Then the other wing basement is youth, it's all one large room, with a small kitchen. We have so mmuch rebuilt stiff, like both the kitchens are almost totally new, because the man that was mudered in our church in Jan. was a builder, owned his own company, and he did a lot of it at material cost only, and paid his men to do the work himself. He figured he had them in church, and it made a difference to some of them being there at the way our people treated them, and some of the kitchen women would come in everyday and make coffee for them, and bring it to them.

Bt our building is old, and a few years ago had a lot of repairs that it needed, and some so bad we risked loosing the building, so we've had to do a lot of work.

Oh look what I just found. I did a search, because I really don't know if Donnis has us in line or not. And came up with Musician's Pro, the compoany that did our sound system, becasue you just couldn't hear with the old one.

I attend the Grace Baptist Church of Westchester County, NY., which is located in Elmsford. We do not have any building as of yet, but renting a place from the St. Joseph of Arimathea Episcopal. The church is a classical building, consisting of the original structure from the eighteen hunreds and a new addition with two large meeting places and kitchen. The facilities are modern and in mint condition. Has ample rooms to meet our growing needs. The only drawback is that our Sunday morning meeting is starting at 12:30 PM, because the Episcopalians are meeting in the early hours. But for the rest of the week we can have the run of the building. Here is the edifice - curtesy of Bro. Clint Kritzer (who tinkered with the picture, to be able to post it here - thanks Bro. Nice link, Clint . I am just wondering why your church would include both Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia and the CBF under your "links" section. The last time I checked, those two groups are dimaetrically opposed to each other.


Chris Temple, I know all about Providence Baptist in Raleigh; I drove by it alot when I lived there(out on Glenwood 2-3 miles from Crabtree). Sometimes I wish I had gone there instead of Forest Hills, Hayes-Barton, and Greystone.

 

Our congregation represents a wide array of opinions in the matter of affiliations. Some folks even designate their offerings to one or the other group. I try to keep the links unbiased so that folks can explore the options easier. You will note I also include Lifeway and Smyth & Helwys publishing companies.
It should also be noted that the CBF is NOT completely seperate from the SBC.

Jeff, if you notice this, I have a couple of questions. Do you know when the church houses you picture above were built - especially 1 & 3? The reason I'm asking is this: No. 1 style looks like a lot of country meeting houses built in this area circa 1940's-50's. No. 3 style looks like those built here in the late 1800's (the earlier buildings usually being log structures). The earliest No. 3 style often had two front doors, since men and women sat on different sides of the building. Just curious, 'cause those building look so familiar.

 

Barnabas - the picture you see on our website is the modern-day church; it was merely FOUNDED in 1909. I intend to hook up with the church historian someday, though, and put all that info - and pictures! - on the website.

Chris - what wonderful growth your church has seen! Next time we're in the Raleigh area, I'll look for it.

 

Miss Bobbie, that's an interesting website. I last visited Wilmington 2 years ago at Easter. My dad grew up in Wilmington, graduating from New Hanover High. Is 90.9FM affiliated with "K-Love"; when I was there in 2000 I remember listening to a K-Love station.

 

Our church is brick. It is 2 stories (only in 2 wings though) with a large fellowship hall and a kitchen. Our sanctuary is carpeted with burgundy carpet and the pews are also upholsered with burgundy. We love it. I'll try to find the church website, so that all of you can see where I call home. I think you can also see my Gramma's picture, but not mine.

This is HSBC's third building. It was built in 1946 in the Mission Revival style. The building is a three story U-shape. It's late so I won't go into the layout now.

Good topic. We agree the building is not the church. But it is nice to see the various buildings used for the gathering of people to worship God!!

A small picture of our church Zion can be seen at www.zionpbc.org . We have (Sunday, March 3, 2002), approve a set of plan for a new sanctuary. We are excited about it and pray the Lord's will be done.
