Where does this come from?

I've heard the expression... "The plan of salvation is so simple that even a child can understand it."

While I believe that to be true, where does it come from... I was shocked when I heard a preacher say the other day, "THE BIBLE SAYS that the plan of salvation is so simple that even a child can understand it."

Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved.

Sounds simple - but is it?

I put a Shelf rack together yesterday that was supposed to be simple - should only have taken 10 minutes. Took me 45 minutes! :tonofbricks:

A PREACHER said that? Said that the Bible actually says that?

Matthew 18:2-3 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2 Corinthians 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

Romans 12:8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

I think the statement you've mentioned points to the simplicity of the message that Christ died for our sins and reconciled us to the Father. Surely that doesn't take a scholar to understand, though i'm sure that simplicity is a tripping point for many high-minded folks that like to hear themselves use big words.

I agree the message IS simple.
But NOwhere in the Bible does it say what the OP says the preacher says it says.
True, but it sounds like he was using a rough paraphrase of biblical truth.

On a side note, while the message is simple, the application for an adult is anything but. Remember back to your childhood. Faith in something or someone was much easier to the young mind.

Tom...

The closest to what you say the preacher said would probably be this...

Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

That would make the preachers statement that the scriptures teach that even a child can understand the plan of salvation a true statement.

No problem at all.

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

When I help a child memorize this verse, they understand it.

I have heard of children as young as 4 supposedly being saved. However, how can a child who is too young to understand the concept of death understand what hell is or the reason he/she must be saved? That's difficult for many adults to understand.

Is that verse talking about the simplicity of the gospel, or the innocent mind of a child? I think the latter.

Cheers,

Jim

My son just turned 5 and has a pretty good grasp on death already. He even understands the reason Christ died and why we need a Savior. I'm not going to press him on anything, just continue to teach him whenever I can. If he was saved this year it wouldn't surprise me, but it's God's timing not ours.

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

That expression is a FACT. Paul first tells us, and then John confirms. All of the if's, butt's, and whoever's after this fact are only thoughts without validity.

I was 4 when I was saved and I certainly understood the concept of death. In fact, in my thought process before salvation I figured I could wait until I was on my deathbed until trusting Christ. I'm sure I had heard a sermon about deathbed religion.

Probably my ability to understand death at that age came from the funeral of my grandmother before that when I saw her dead body and knew no one was in there. So no doubt understanding death depends on the 4-year-old's previous experience.

The understanding that a child must have, to get saved, has less to do with an understanding of death and more to do with an understanding of sin.

A child can’t be saved, until they know that they are a sinner, that needs salvation.

This knowledge of sin, is what the age of accountability is all about........
Genesis 3:11a
“And he said, Who told thee that thou [wast] naked?.........”

Does anyone really know the age of accountability, except for themselves? I found it in my life at the age of 4 or 5 years old. While playing with others bout my age. One mentioned "God". For whatever reason I said "Ha! Ha! Do you believe in God?

I was stopped in my tracks, and was dumb struck. The moment I said it I was immediately AFRAID. At that moment the process started. Somewhere between that event, and the age of nine I received Jesus Christ into my heart, joining His Church. I then walked the aisle in a Baptist church.

Hi ituttut

You said.....
“Does anyone really know the age of accountability, except for themselves?”
Your right, because it isn’t a set age.
It has to do with the conscience of each individual young person.

But we have a clue in Genesis, about how we can see this awareness in children......
Genesis 3:7
“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”

When a child gains the knowledge of good and evil, something happens in them, that effects their modesty.

We are all(most of us), familiar with the practice of children running through a sprinkler in the summer time, when it’s hot.

Sometimes younger children(in the back yard), will do this with no cloths on, because they don’t realize they are naked.
But a few months or years later, they don’t want to do that anymore.

They have reached the age of accountability.
