Just wondering which Bible commentary some of you use, if any?
I have been using a John Macarthur's Commentary.

I do not use any commentaries for they are all the doctrines of men! How dare we who believe in the priesthood of the believer go to the teachings of other men to help us! I, being a mere man, will rely on my own understanding and my own interpretation, thank you very much!

    Sarcasm OFF.

I use a variety, some commentaries on the whole bible (such as Matthew Henry, Matthew Poole, John Trapp) and others that deal with a particular bible book (such as Charles Bridges on Ecclesiastes, Herbert C. Leupold on Zechariah, Sinclair Fergusson on Ruth, etc.)

Though it is not new, it is not as old as some that have been cited on this thread -- I use, among others, the Broadman Bible Commentary series. And yes, both versions of Volume 1!

I also find help on occasion in the Communicator's Commentary.

When I need a quick fix I go to either the Harper's or the Oxford one-volume works.

I do not use any one particular person's commentary or a particular series of commentaries. I do this for two primary reasons:

    1) I never want to only be influenced by one, single perspective. I want to explore, examine, and investigate many perspectives when teaching or preaching, especially those perspectives that I don't hold and/or disagree with.

    2) I often find that a particular series will have a great commentary on one biblical book but a horrific one on another. To help with this, a good commentary guide is helpful. There are three that I have found particularly helpful: Commentary and Reference Survey by Glynn (on the whole bible), NT Commentary Survey by Carson, and OT Commentary Survey by Longman.

Also helpful would be some biblical theology books. My favorite one is by I. Howard Marshall, its called New Testament Theology.

    Hope thats helpful!

    I'm mostly old school:

    OT: Keil and Delitzsch

    NT:
    A. T. Robertson's Word Pictures
    Vincent's Word Studies
    Alford's Greek NT

    However, newer ones:
Expositor's bible Commentary, OT & NT
    The Complete Biblical Library

But more than the commentaries I go to the original languages.

And occasionally John R. Rice on: Dan., Matt., Luke, John, Acts, 1 Cor, Rev. :type:

There are some good online commentaries out there, especially for people who aren't interested in hardcore academic stuff. One great example are the Expository Notes by Dr. Thomas Constable of Dallas Theological Seminary which are available at Sonic Light.

Dr. Constable is consistently conservative but does not ignore many issues that arise from the text. He also firmly holds to the authority of the Bible and make many interesting points and applications along the way.

I use John MacArthur's Study Bible and it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY!! I agree that we should use a variety of good study/commentary guides tho from reputable sources.

What is that Bible verse that says that without someone to teach us, how will we learn? I was looking for it but can't find it ... I need better memorization skills!! :BangHead:

    I think you mean this:

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

The Holy Spirit is our teacher.

Jhn 14:26 But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
