White Cop Shoots Black Man in Back as He Runs Away After Being Tased

Mr. Scott ran away, and Officer Slager chased him into a grassy lot that abuts a muffler shop. He fired his Taser, an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop Mr. Scott, according to police reports.

Moments after the struggle, Officer Slager reported on his radio: “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser,” according to police reports.

But the video, which was taken by a bystander and provided to The New York Times by the Scott family’s lawyer, presents a different account. The video begins in the vacant lot, apparently moments after Officer Slager fired his Taser. Wires, which carry the electrical current from the stun gun, appear to be extending from Mr. Scott’s body as the two men tussle and Mr. Scott turns to run.

Something — it is not clear whether it is the stun gun — is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men, and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots.

The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something up off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scott’s body, the video shows.

That wouldn't matter. Police officers are not allowed to use deadly force unless they or someone else is in danger. The guy was fleeing and he shot him in the back 8 times.

Unless there is some other clear evidence, and I doubt there is from what I've viewed on a local news channel, this was nothing less than outright murder, and be it, a cop or a citizen, this is appalling, and the shooter deserves no mercy.

May I add one thought. It is not that a white cop shot a black man in the back; it is more than that! It is one individual killing another in the most cowardly form of murder a human can commit. It reminds me of the assassination of Jesse James by another coward known as Robert Ford.

Mankind has been killing one another in cowardly manners since the creation of man, and Cain slewed Abel. This is despicable, and unless there is something, this video does not show us, this was not necessary. In fact, even if there are some extenuating circumstances, yet to be shown evidence for the shooting, this cop appears to be nothing more than a cowardly, outright killer.

I do not believe I could sit on this jury, because even with a well crafted defense, I'd have to say this cop acted in a manner that is disgraceful to all men and women who serve to protect us under the color of the badge.

I do not agree with your "alarmist" approach to this incident, brother. It may show that there are cops that are cowardly and use the power of the badge to commit murder, but truth be known, this does not say to me that there is, as you said, "serious problem in the U.S."

As far as I remember, since December 3, 2014 we have Eric Garner, the Cleveland 12 year old (12/12/14), and this one today. By my count that is three incidents of over use of power ending in the death of a suspect by police. And this means, that in five months, there have been 3 horrible deaths of blacks by cops, and when you consider the size of this nation, the number of cops; the number of criminal incidents taking place every day; etc., three deaths does not equal a "serious problem!" If it were three deaths in a day, or in one week maybe I'd say maybe you are correct. But right now, I'd say this proves that police have a few bad apples, and they need to be sought out and removed before they harm any more individuals, regardless of color.

Deadly use of force can only be used if it is determined that the offender is an immediate threat to life or property. The man in the video would not qualify for that. He has been charged with murder and will most likely be found guilty.
