A measure in the National Defense Authorization Act meant to keep white nationalists out of the U.S. military no longer mentions “white nationalists” after the Senate quietly altered the text.

The change, which has not been previously reported, could water down a House-passed amendment meant to address the threat of white nationalists in the military. The House language was specifically drafted to encourage screening for white nationalist beliefs in military enlistees. But the Republican-controlled Senate’s version of the massive military spending bill, which passed on Tuesday and went to President Donald Trump’s desk, instead requires the Department of Defense to study ways to screen military enlistees for “extremist and gang-related activity.”

While it may seem like a minor tweak, the removal of the term “white nationalists” from the amendment text was concerning to Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), who introduced the amendment in July after alarming reports about white nationalists in the U.S. military.

I am a white guy and consider myself a nationalist. I even heard the president claim that he is a nationalist. I fail to see the problem with being a "white nationalist." If I had my way, only nationalists would be allowed into the military.

I believe they should. The question then becomes...what is considered a terrorist ideology and who gets to decide.
For instance, there are Satanists in the military. Should they be screened out? There are Muslims in the military, should they be screened out for radical views? There are white supremacist christians. Should they be screened out?
If so, how ought that to be done?

This is why I placed christian without capitalization. There are, unfortunately, many white supremacists who identify themselves as Christian. The South was chalk full of them and the Southern Baptist Conference had many in their membership.
However, it seems to be incongruous with Christianity to be a prejudiced bigot. Hence the reason I left christian not capitalized.

That NDAA hasn't passed yet, so adding or removing anything has zero affect on how people were able to enlist in the past.

The title is fake news.

Involvement in extremist organizations has been forbidden to members and a disqualification to enlistment for the 23 years I've been in. DoDI 1325.06 spells it out for all services, no "supremacist, extremist or criminal gang ideology or causes" allowed.

The post was to point out that reactionary policies more often target a single group in which other groups then fill the vacuum.

“White” supremacy is just a color attached to the problem of one person (group) adapting a Darwinian science to humans.

The arrangements of primacy shifts depending on the shape and bumps on the scull, the birthright, Heritage, IQ, gender, ....

It all comes down to sin enriched hearts and minds of bully mentality.

I dislike looking to semantics, but nationalism is inherently tied to racism. As in the National Socialists wanting to remove non-German people from what they considered their national homeland. This goes beyond English, and it isn't worth trying to "reclaim" the word when patriotism gets the meaning across and is unsullied by European politics.

La Raza would be a good example of a nationalist group here; they seek to reclaim ground based on ethnicity, and boot out other people.

Just a thought now. How often have white nationalists created problems for the military as opposed to Islamicists? Yeah, I think they should have adjusted the wording.
