For those who do not deny the reality of Hell as taught in Scripture, a question arises that might not be as easily understood or answered as some of might think.

So the question is opened up for discussion.

Will the answer to this change who is there? Their eternities are set. Let's focus on the living and keeping them out.:jesus:

Indeed. We have a saying at church regarding some of the hard work that missionaries do--"They pitched their tent 10 feet from the gates of Hell and are working to keep people from going there."

Does it bother you, and others, to believe their eternities are set?

This is not directed at you because I don't know you. If Christians really believe in what they claim to, why not much, much more urgency to keep people out of hell? I personally don't see the urgency.

What do you think about the current trend of popularity among professing believers that have adopted a view that the lost will not suffer eternal punishment, and that many are denying that Scripture teaches there is even a literal gehenna taught in Scripture?

Are you running into that much on the streets?

It hurts my heart to know that anyone has to spend eternity separated from Christ.

    I don't either.

We indeed are in the last days.
And thus Jesus said in Luke 18:8,
... Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

That philosophy being put forth, no urgency, no need for the Great Commission, is disobedience to the Lord who wept over the city of Jerusalem and its inhabitants. He always saw an urgency in the salvation of others, and He was deity in the flesh. Astounding!

What I see too much of - and this goes for Christians, too - is to get more and more material things. Even churches it seems are caught up in it. I don't really see a lot of church members who are wiling to really help out their fellow members that much.

Only this way: That "the church" seems more focused on material things than keeping people out of hell.

OP Who Currently Resides in Hell Today?

I trust I am not derailing the thread, but isn't hades and hell the same thing?

    Rev 20:14 states:
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

If no one is in Hell right now, then when, scripturally, are people put in Hell? As Salty points out, Death and Hell are delivered up for judgment and cast into the Lake of Fire. I will grant that my question requires a likely far more literalist interpretation of Revelation than I usually take.

Oh yes. Many do not believe in hell, or they say stuff stupid such as "I want to go to Hell" there is a denial of the doctrine of hell, and part of the problem is that so few evangelicals preach on it.

This is why its wise to get gospel tracts that focus on Hell and pass them out.

I have also open aired on Hell before. Listen to this sermon.

This is a false argument, Rebel.

That you see this does not negate the fact that there are many people with the goal of the Great Commission doing exactly what the Early Church did. Complaints about the problems in the churches, when it becomes the focal point for a person, will result in something far worse than the Church having it's problems, it will result in a persecution of Christ that is as real, and damaging, as the ministry of Saul of Tarsus.

Worse, in fact, because Paul's persecution tested and increased the faith of those he persecuted, whereas speaking evil of the Church gives support to prospective converts who also refrain from trusting Christ...because they cannot "trust" the Church.

You cannot possibly think you are a valid critic of...churches. All you might be able to comment on is that association and experience you have had personally.

In regards to Hell, this is just a basic Bible Principle that correlates to another Bible Principle, which is that man is separated from God, Christ is the remedy, and the Church is used to present these truths to the world. Isaiah once complained that he was standing alone in his efforts, and the Lord told him, he was not.

Will there be materialism in the Churches? Sure, because the Church is still materially attached to the material world. But that does not mean it is a good idea to broad-brush the Church and present her as materialistic. That does not mean that there are no individuals living Christian lives and seeking to discover, and do, God's will for their lives.

And the first step is to be ready in regards to the Word of God. That too has always been under attack by our enemies, and the question will be...who knows it better. I am not suggesting natural men can actually understand the Word of God, but, they can grasp basic principles set forth in God's Word. They do that, and see the Church not meeting that righteous standard, and declare hypocrisy, which again, is used as an excuse to reject Christ.

Understanding the Doctrine of Hell is simply a must for all believers. I think most will admit that the Spirit of God impresses the reality of Hell on everyone who comes to fear God. It is not just a "reverent awe" as many like to dismiss it as, because the lost have no reverence for God.

They do, though, have a fear of Hell, and the last thing we want to do as Christians is douse that fear that was not supplied by their understanding of Scripture, and was not even supplied by our understanding of Scripture...it is supplied by the Spirit of God, and the only way one can convince themselves that Hell is not a reality and not taught in Scripture is to...

    ...resist the Spirit of God.

    God bless.
