Do you as the pastor decide who you are going to marry and not marry, or do you take it from what you hear the congregation saying, for example, "the last pastor didn't marry ones who were divorced, and neither should you."?

The way it works in my church I decide.

If I don't feel that the LORD wants me to do it I don't.

Does a pastor answer to man or God? In matters of this life - I listen carefully to the elders and deacons. They take care of business, not me. They make decisions on a great number of programs and policies. I do not infringe on their ministry or gifts.

But in the pulpit (or, during a wedding, where the pulpit should be) it is MY territory. I decide whom I am going to marry.

Now, the church may have policies about who gets married in our building. Again, mundane territory that is NOT mine.

But I will marry them in the park or home or rented facility if I choose.

Same thing with topics for Sunday School or for series of exposition of the Word. That is for MY spirit and communion with God to decide.
I do the ministry or the word and prayer; they can do the rest!!

The pastor has to decide because it is his conscience that must deal with it. Personally, I would rather send everyone to a JP. Not sure that it is really a function of the church. Marriage is a civil manner because that is why the ceritifcate is needed for governmental issues. Yes, it should be spiritual union and is whether the folks know it or not or care. At least, it keeps them from lying in church when they say until death do us part if tell it to a JP.

Only a fool of a pastor would go with the crowd in a situation such as this. If he can't stand on his own convictions as a pastor, he has problems.

Hey, Sis! I decided when the couple came and asked me to do the ceremony. I always asked the Sr. pastor for his permission to use the church if it was where they wanted to be married. In my case, the couples were people who had been divorced from one another and then been counselled and ended up getting remarried to each other (Praise the Lord for restoration!). I believe it is the preacher's decision.

I only performed weddings for members of my own local church. I will not marry those unequally yolked, and, yes, I have married a divorced person, after much counsel. I never believed in divorce, but it happens.I also don't believe in making people suffer eternal Hell on earth.
In Canada, the rules obtaining a licence to perform weddings, differs from province to province. The licence does not transfer with the minister and must be returned to the province when one is moving to another province. In a sense, the minister becomes an agent of the province.
There are some who break the rules, keep their licence and perform weddings at random, from newspaper adverts. At $400.00 per service it is not a bad living, I suppose.
