In ancient times, when a king wanted to conquer a city, he would send word to the inhabitants, give them the opportunity to surrender and open the gate, or be besieged and destroyed.

Psalm 24:7-10 King James Version (KJV)
7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

Jesus is the mighty King of Glory. "Strong and mighty", "mighty in battle", he could easily overpower anything. He never fails. But he doesn't do that. He chose to stand at the "everlasting doors" of our hearts and knock. Every heart is an "everlasting door" because we will all spend eternity somewhere. But it is YOU who must open YOUR door. He only knocks.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
