A very interesting column by Georg Will. He is correct. Everyone votes based on his/her values.

    Who Isn't a 'Values Voter'?
    By George Will

WASHINGTON -- An aggressively annoying new phrase in America's political lexicon is ``values voters.'' It is used proudly by social conservatives, and carelessly by the media to denote such conservatives.

This phrase diminishes our understanding of politics. It also is arrogant on the part of social conservatives and insulting to everyone else because it implies that only social conservatives vote to advance their values, and everyone else votes to ... well, it is unclear what they supposedly think they are doing with their ballots....

Today's liberal agenda includes preservation, even expansion, of the welfare state in its current configuration in order to strengthen an egalitarian ethic of common provision. Liberals favor taxes and other measures to produce a more equal distribution of income. They may value equality indiscriminately, but they vote their values.

Among the various flavors of conservatism, there is libertarianism that is wary of government attempts to nurture morality, and there is social conservatism that says unless government nurtures morality, liberty will perish. Both kinds of conservatives use their votes to advance what they value.

    The article said:
"the media are furthering the fiction that these voters are somehow more morally awake than others. Today's liberal agenda includes...taxes and other measures to produce a more equal distribution of income. They may value equality indiscriminately, but they vote their values."

==I think that is a fair picture of the majority of the left in this country. However I would argue that a Biblical morality is "more morally awake than others". This is because Biblical morality is defined by God and "liberal morality" is defined by mortal, sinful man. Having said that, however, I must make clear that being moral will not save a person's soul. A person cannot obey the Law and be saved. To be saved a person must repent of their sin, and turn to Christ as Lord and Savior in faith. So while I certainly support 100% "Biblical morality" as a way of life for the saved (Christians) I think we should make clear (when speaking to non-Christians) that morality alone will not save.

Now to the issue of "values voters". I agree with George Will that everyone who votes, and takes their votes seriously, will vote their values. However I think when the media, and when conservatives, use the phrase "values voters" (etc) they are talking about "traditional values", not "values" in a generic sense. If they were using "values" in a generic since, Will may have a stronger point. However since the phrase "values voter" is, I believe, code for "traditional values" I think his point is weakened just a little.

    Martin.

But liberals also have such a long history of values that are a tradition with us. [IMG] So our values are traditional values to us.

Values are an individual thing. Our number one value should be those things which advance issues that are for the good of the American people and our nation as a whole.

The values that both parties promote are smoke and mirrors. The difference between the two parties is a mirage. Their only value is to hold on to their power, collectively between them.

So, I really have a hard time understanding how a person who is concerned about others can vote his values for either party.

I generally vote for or against the candidate, not the party. When a candidate is running on more than one slate, then I'll vote the party I favor.

Morality based on the Bible is a stronger foundation. But it the utmost in hypocricy to claim that only conservatives have Biblical values. That's a lie. Conservative and Liberal are political views not religious beliefs. I seriously doubt that you'll any more conservatives in heaven than you'll find liberals there.
