altho he's claimed by some to be a father of KJBOism, he really sounds sane in the quote below:

    JOHN WILLIAM BURGON

Once for all, we request it may be clearly understood that we do not, by any means, claim perfection for the Received Text. We entertain no extravagant notions on this subject. Again and again we shall have occasion to point out that the Textus Receptus needs correction. [The Revision Revised(1883), pg. 21, as quoted in Theodore Letis' The Revival of the Ecclesiastical Text pg. 44]

wow, even the pure text may not be perfect and needs correction! i wonder if today's "Dean Burgon Society" subscribes to that.

Burgon was a scholar of the highest magnitiude, and many od his criticisms of the W_H text theory have never been refuted (despite what Dan Wallace says  )

He was not KJVO, and believed, as your post says, that the TR needed correction.

And his associate, F.H.A. Scrivener, did those corrections and published his work in 1894, after Burgon's death. However, Scrivener left some things unchanged with Burgon had earlier objected too, preseumably on the basis of evidence he uncovered. As Burgon was already dead, we have no way of telling if the evidence Scrivener presented would have satisfied Burgon. But he was undoutedly the finest textual scholar in the world of his day.

    Dr. C:

Are there any English versions based upon Scrivener's text, and if not, why not?

All of Jay Green's work is based on the Scrivener text, and the NKJV also follows Scrivener, for the most part. I am not sure about the 21st Century KJV and the Bible for the Third Millenium, but they also seem to follow Scrivener. It is Scrivener's text which is presently published by the Trinitarian Bible Society under the name "Textus Receptus." [IMG]

John Burgon (Dean of Chichester)in the 1880's was also a devoted churchman of the Anglican Church.

As such he would have had to (officially anyway) endorse infant baptism and "once saved not necessarily always saved".
