That’s good pipedude, the thread did not say United States Presidents did it? Of course we could open the possibilities to include one of my favorites, Jack Welch.

My favorite U. S. president would have to be Teddy Roosevelt. The national parks have got to go down as the best thing our government has ever done.

Best president in my lifetime? No contest, it’s Ronald Reagan. He made us feel proud to be American’s again.

MP, I agree with you on Jimmy Carter. If only he could have become an Ex-President without being a president first.

 

Yep. I didn't care for his presidency, but he is a good and decent man who has worked tirelessly for democracy around the world since leaving office. His work with Habitat has been more than just photo ops. He is an elder statesman now, who does America proud.

 

My favorite president?

Looking at the biographies I own I would say it must be George Washington. I don't know though, I really enjoy studying the Presidency of Ulysses S Grant.

 

Since I am American Indian, a president on this very list gets my vote for worst.

 

Am I allowed an opinion as a Canadian? I rather liked Mr. Barry Goldwater,,,,,,,,,,,wait, he lost the election to that other blighter........

Really, I liked Mr. Jimmy Carter, both in and out of office.

I have nothing but disdain for both Mr. FDR and his successor. Mr. Truman sacked the only hope we had to win the war in Korea.

I agree that Mr. Reagan restored a sense of greatness to America..even a great debt, sadly.

Best 3:
1. George Washington--he took on the hurculean task of leading a country in its infancy, and did it amazingly well.

2. Ronald Reagan--restored pride in USA and played a major part in the fall of the USSR, and a significant role in communism's demise.

3. Calvin Coolidge--believed in limited government--he also had great common sense and handled people so well.

Worst 3:

1. Warren Harding: unbelievably corrupt. Poor judge of character as well.

2. Lyndon Johnson: probably the dirtiest politician of the bunch. Seemed to surround himself with yes men and liars.

3. Andrew Johnson: inept at handling any of the divided factions following the Civil War. One major character failure: he was against the original Civil Rights bill of 1866 (forbade discrimination against former slaves).

 

My favorite President is George Washington. After visiting Mt. Vernon, pouring over the exhibits in the museum and then spending the entire next day reading the biography that I bought in the gift shop, no contest. He's my favorite.

After that, I'd have to say John Quincy Adams. Unusual choice, and certainly not a popular man but in his day, politicians lied and got elected, and JQA told the truth, was proven right, and never won a majority of votes. Gee, what does that sound like.

I think Carter gets a bad rap because of Iran, but if you look at his administration, he's the only President who negotiated a peace agreement in the Middle East that is still holding. That's right folks, the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt might be on shaky ground right now, but that's Carter's best work. Also, a lot of people don't realize that it was his administration that not only took all the heat for a crisis in Iran that actually started when his predecessor Ford was in office, but it was the Carter administration that brokered the return of the hostages. It was a last slap in the face by the Ayatollah Khomeini to not release them until Reagan was in office, but the negotiations took place under Carter's authority. Reagan's people were not involved in any way. He could have just given up and passed the problem on to Reagan, but he didn't.

I liked Jerry Ford, too. I think he also got a bad rap because of the circumstances of being appointed to office by Nixon and then feeling obligated to pardon him. Politically, he accomplished nothing, but only had two years in office and even the Republicans in Congress wouldn't support him because he was tainted by Nixon. I think, if he's had a chance to run and be elected in his own right, he would have been a good President.

Least favorite? The ones lacking luster, among them Van Buren, Fillmore, Arthur, Cleveland, Coolidge, Hoover, Harding, Garfield, McKinley, Buchanan, the two Harrisons and Taft. Extensive, in depth history classes kind of bogged down in the places where these guys had to be examined in depth.
