Why A Baptist CAN Practice Spiritual Gifts And NOT be a Pentacostalist!

Think that sometimes we Baptists are 'closed" to the idea that the Spriitual Gifts may NOT have actually fully ceased after the Apostolic Age due to the idea that we somehow would actually become a "pentacostal" Church..

IF you hold that they did cease based how you interprete the Bible as regarding ending they ceased after Apostles and canon of scriptures officially closed, have NO problem with that viewpoint...

IF you think though big reason to not believe is that you become no longer baptist byt Pentacostalist...

You can still have the operation of the Gifts today in Church BUT MUST be done strictly thru Biblical guidelines on their usuage...

They NEVER add to/contridict/superced the Bible, and are not primary, as Bible must keep the supremacy...

Why I say you can be practicing Charisma and yet NOT be a charasmatic/pentacostalist is that in order to become one, and no longer a baptist would HAVE to adhere to these doctrines in addition to Spiritual Gifts still operating today...

all 5 offices still in operation/effect today
Physical healing was made in blood atonement of Christ, "By His stripes we were healed"
second act of grace "baptism In Holy Ghost" THE Sign being Speaking in tongues
the extreme groups also would add

Modern day revelation from Apostles/prophets
God will is that you prosper in ALL things, confess/believe/receive
Jesus died spiritual, went literally to hell, got born again
deny Jesus as God, basically a man who was a Master in using the word and faith to get things done

As long as you do not hold to those above additional points, would still remain a Baptist "in good standing"

If the sign gifts are being used for the purpose of sharing the gospel then they would be in biblical boundaries.

If someone is speaking in tongues it would need to be a known language not previously learned by that person in the context of sharing the gospel to someone who has never heard it.

If it is healing then it needs to be done in the context of showing God's power and glory for the lifting up of the gospel. And the person healed will not relaps.

But these fake jibberish fests some folks call tongues or pretending to pray in jibberish in a "prayer closet" makes a mockery of the gospel and God.

Basically, ALL those that fall into the camp of being "revelatory Gifts"

Think that many baptists are afraid/think that IF those gifts were still to operate today, would mean the canon was not closed officially, and that God was 'adding" to the revelation from Himself to Church today...

ONLY those heretical pentacostal/Charasmatic groups teach/believe that is true... they see the modern Apostles/Prophets actuall DO speak "inpired/revealed" things from God...

I dont understand your comment. Why in heavens name would anyone be afraid of God....is He not Sovereign? Can He not do what he wants to do? Are we again going to introduce human beings into Gods Sovereign world? I sincerely hope not!

BTW....What does the word "Quenching" meant to you as Paul uses it in this context?

I would think that tongues is the most annoying & even Paul indicated in Scripture that people coming in from the outside would think them nuts (my words & not the Saints) but I dont see them not being there.....could you show me where they ceased?

1. Whenever tongues (actual known languages) were spoken, there were Jews present. Tongues were a sign to the unbelieving Jews, particularly those Jews that had rejected Christ as Messiah in the first century.

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. (1 Corinthians 14:21-22)
--In verse 21 "this people" refers to the nation of Israel. It is a fulfillment of the prophecy given in Isa.28:11,12. Verse 22 indicates that those Jews were unbelieving Jews.

2. Tongues was a "sign gift." It was a gift given specifically to identify the apostles and those connected to the apostles to verify them and their message as being from God. There were many false prophets in that time, but only one true message. Tongues was one of the ways the Jews and others could identify that their message and messenger was from the Lord.

Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds. (2 Corinthians 12:12)

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? (Hebrews 2:3-4)
--The gifts of the Holy Spirit were given to the apostles. They bore witness of Christ through them.

3. Miracles in general were only done when revelation was given.
For example, there were man miracles done during the time of Moses. The Pentateuch was written at that time.
Then a number of miracles were done during the time of the Prophets, especially during the ministries of Elijah and Elisha. During this time most of the OT was written.
After Ezra the scribe (contemporary with Malachi) God was silent for more than 400 years. He did not communicate to any man. No prophet was on the scene.
Then John the Baptist appeared, the forerunner of Christ. Miracles again began to appear with the advent of Christ and also with his disciples. This was when the NT was written, coming to an end with the last book, Revelation, written ca. 98 A.D. Then our canon of Scripture was complete. Miracles ceased including tongues. They had finished their purpose. History attests to this.

4. Tongues were given as a temporary gift until God's written revelation was completed. This is demonstrated in First Corinthians, one of the first epistles written. Later epistles don't speak of tongues. In this church tongues were used because most of the NT was not written and here was a form of communication that God gave to those who came to this major Greek port and spoke another language besides Greek.

5. It is worth noting that in 1Cor.12:28 the spiritual gifts are listed in order of importance. Tongues and the interpretation thereof are listed last, as being the least important of all the gifts.
