Why a Pulpit?

A pulpit is not an essential, but it has served a historical service in the church. The pulpit is not about the preacher, it is about the authority of the Word of God. It is a symbol of that very authority and of respect. Some churches actually have raised pulpits; again, not to elevate the preacher, but the preached word. Corporate worship is different than an informal bible study or discussion group. Sitting on a chair or walking around is not necessarily a bad thing. I am sure it has its appeal to the younger set, so I am not going to condemn it.

I got rid of it
It used to be called the "sacred desk" by some preachers.
It symbolized the teacher's lectern, in which good instruction was given. Back in the day, every classroom in the upper levels had such a desk. So, it was naturally fit for the assembly to have one, too.
I like it because it is a handy storage place for the clutter left over from the previous service.

I guess it depends on if you preach from notes or overhead Power Point.
I just don't need it. It opens up the stage area to the praise team. It is a traditional thing that is not necessary.
I preach from an outline but I print them out in book form and stick them in my bible.

When your knees and hips give out, it is time to get a stool. A podium with a swing out seat would be nice.
Modern???? Church buildings have stage-like structures which accomodate a well dressed choir and all sorts of instruments. Some instrument players are paid. Some display their talents to great accolades--very entertaining. Then after no small amount of musical mesmerization, someone brings a "canned" message. There is little conviction shown in the congregation, no repentance--but a good sermon nonetheless. Not much is heard about: sin, righteousness and judgement to come.
We need to get down in the trenches and preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified; and without Jesus mankind is going to Hell. Get eyeball to eyeball--people will repent --some may leave the building.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

The pulpit was also a tool, a stage prop, a line drawn in the sand.
A tool, because a person could use it much like a sounding board to bounce the voice off, to beat on in order to add emphasis, and to present a place of judgment much like that of a courtroom with the judges bench.
A stage prop, because it could serve in the stage drama of the presentation, it could be leaned over like one would do when sharing stories with the neighbor, climbed upon like a tree, or hid behind like a bush, and it could be removed which signaled something special and extraordinary was going to be presented.
A line in the sand, because only those worthy were allowed to stand behind it (though that wasn't always the truth), a separation between God's servant and the unholy, a sacred piece of furniture of great status from which the Scriptures were placed, opened, and taught. It was the place that a presenter would step out from behind to bring greater emphasis to a presentation, and a place in which people would be able to focus while pondering what was said.
Other uses, a place for a small child to hide, a status symbol, and a microphone stand when microphones were large and heavy.

the main thing the city was concerned was that there be sufficient parking for 1 vehicle for every 4 attendees.
In addition, contact your insurance company. You want to make sure you are covered in the case of a large claim.
