Why flags @ church?

I have never eaten a flag.

 

You've never had a little red flag go off in your mind?

 

For the most part, Americans are very patriotic.

Our church has an American Flag to show our patriotism to our Country. Our church has a Christian Flag to show our service and loyalty to our Lord and Savior.

Part of the Vacation Bible School service, is a pledge to the American Flag, a pledge to the Christian Flag, and a pledge to the Bible, God's Holy word.

This morning as part of our Sunday, Memorial Day Worship Service, the flags were presented while the National Anthem was played and then the congregation said the pledge to the Flag of the United States and then the pledge to the Christian Flag.

The participation was voluntary, but appeared to be unanimous.

 

Is there a problem with having flags at church?

 

Personally, I don't think there should be flags in a church assembly, but I don't make an issue of it. I have no loyalty to a Christian flag as there is no mention of such in the Bible. The pledge of allegiance is absolutely great outside of a church assembly.

Having attended a Church of Christ for over 43 years before becoming a Southern Baptist I wasn't reared with flags in a church assembly so maybe it's a cultural thing that I am not used to.

 

Well Ken, if it were a cultural thing, then the use of a musical instrument other than the human voice in a Baptist Church must have been a real shocker to get used to following 43 years in a Church of Christ. How did you overcome THAT obstacle??? Afterall, when growing up I was used to a large organ on one side and a piano on the other. Nowadays, you might be faced with a small band like ensemble all the way up to a small orchestra in a few of the largest churches.
Don't you feel horribly out of place??? Flags AND musical instruments.......

 

Mrs. Ross, my first grade public school teacher had us sing "America' every morning as we started school.

My country tis of thee,

I learned my thankfullness to God for my country early.

A flag, just one more reminder that God is good.

What temple? Our church buildings ain't temples.

 

We have flags in our buildings, I suppose, for the same reason we have prayer at High School football games!!

 

I have a problem with American flags inside the church. Our citizenship has nothing whatsoever to do with our faith. Try to find that connection in the Bible. My pastor is an ex-chaplain and he's big on "posting the colors" and saying allegiance to the flag. We did that this morning in honor of Memorial Day, I think it's blasphemy and never join in this little ritual.

 

I was taught that the Pledge was said, occasionally, at church to remind us that we need to be a nation that looks to God for leadership, and that when we stop respecting God, the country will cease to be blessed.

I tend to feel the last decade has proven that theory correct.

 

Part of the freedom men and women gave their lives for includes the freedom of citizenship. If the least we can do is honour our nation's flag in the hallowed halls of worship, so be it.

I, for one, will always honour my country, as represented by my flag. As a Korean veteran, it is one of the things I look for in a church. In a real sense it says they remember what I did, and I like that.

Yes, it was quite a shock. How did I handle it? I got used to it over time. Emotions are temporary.

==First we don't have temples. The Temple is part of the Old Testament and not part of the New. In the New Testament there is the church. The local church is not a building but a gathering of God's people in one location to learn, fellowship, and worship.

Secondly most churches, not just Baptist, have flags in their churches. Not just American flags either. Most have the Christian flag, some also have their state flag (etc).

Thirdly the history of the United States of America ties this country to the church (in one form or the other). In America Christianity is very, very important. Churches having American flags acknowledges this fact.

Fourthly there is nothing wrong with patriotism in church as long as it is aimed in the right direction. We praise God for the freedoms and opportunities (etc) that He has given us in this great country. It is thanksgiving to God for His blessings on this country.

When i was a late teen, i knew a Church of
Christ member who played the gutiar at
Baptist felowships

 

I know of no Primitive Baptist Church that has a flag in their building.

Personally, except for praying for our leaders and soldiers, I like to keep secular affairs out of the church.

We go to church to worship God and that trumps patriotism in my book.

Any other time and place, I say have as many flags as you want. Say the pledge everyday. Sing all the verses to the Star Spangled Banner.

Those things are just fine and should be practiced outside of the church.

Ken, you should have become an Old Baptist. We don't have flags or instruments.

 

The key word there is "fellowships". He could do it there as it wasn't a worship service. My best buddy was a member of Church of Christ from childhood. He had no problems whatsoever with enjoying popular musical instruments, just no in the church services.
