Why is it difficult to be a liberal in this day and time?

For starters, most everything in Scripture has already been denied by someone else. Liberals lack creativity. I do have to say that Clark Pinnock and his lost buddies were pretty creative with their "risky God" bit.

    For example:
    1. Virgin birth - denied
    2. Original sin - denied
    3. Genesis creation account - denied or turned into a myth
    4. Deity of Christ - denied
    5. Absolute foreknowledge of God - redefined to make people feel better at being god
    6. Inerrancy - denied
    7. Role distinctions - denied (although I still don't know any pregnant dads)
    8. Bodily return of Christ - denied or twisted to some cloud thing
    9. Belief that truth can be known - denied and relabled as intollerance (classic)

These are just some areas of horrible theology. What does the modern liberal do?

The Modern Liberal simply continues to "store up wrath for the day to come",Like every other Christ rejecting individual. The difference is that most liberals and Church goers have been deceived by the gospel of "decisionism", so they think they are saved when in reality they have never been CONVERTED.

Actually, it is probably quite easy to be a liberal today -- the world definitely approves of that 'form' of Christianity!

It's much harder to stand up for the truth. That makes a lot of people very uncomfortable.

While I totally disagree with Pinnock's journey down the slippery slope, can you refer me to a place where he denies the deity of Christ or the virgin birth?

Alas, the label "liberal" has become one that some hyperconservatives slap on anyone who does agree with them.

IMO, it has lost its meaning.

SBC, I was not saying that Pinnock denies the virgin birth. I honest don't know what he says about that.

I mentioned him as a creative liberal (with the Open Theism bit). That is all.

And the creativity of some fundamentalists to hold on to their imagined orthodoxy never comes to an end.

I don't perceive myself to be a liberal, maybe a moderate, but not a liberal. I believe in the virgin birth, deity of Jesus, original sin in your list; it is this nonsense of inerrancy that I can't stomach--and thus other examples from the list I don't agree with. I find it quite comfortable knowing that I am right, and that I am still saved and not heaping up anything but hints of the truth. [IMG]

What's wrong with denying the above? How is that "horrible" theology just because you disagree with them?

One might argue that when one is on the side of truth, they don't need to be creative...

</font>[/QUOTE]One might argue that indeed ... but if it was used to support theological liberalims, they would be incorrect.

Theology is determined by revelation, not by curious speculation and unfounded assertion.

What I'd like to know is this: What got Pinnock started on the "slippery slope" towards theological liberalism???

Arminianism. If you think it through, God does not know with certainty the future. He at least admits that he is following the logic. Others just hide behind buzzwords.

Danny: " ... it is this nonsense of
    inerrancy that I can't stomach ... "

I believe the Bible is the
    inerrant written words of God.
It is nonsense for me to
    believe that my understanding
of all the Bible is inerrant.

Danny, if it is not inerrant -- in the original signatures -- then we must fall back on man's ideas about which part is mistaken and which part true. In that case the Bible means nothing more than someone's opinion of it and cannot rightly be called the Word of God.

Those who want to interpret things for themselves in order to hold to 'current scientific and theological understanding' are simply preferring the creation over the Creator.

Not a wise plan, my friend.

But the revelation of God was in the experience of Israel and is in the person of Jesus Christ, not the man-made words of the Bible.

(As usual, we Baptists always come back to "Jesus vs. the Bible" as the "primary" source of authority over the other...)
