don't think i've ever heard a sermon on Mt.27:52,53...just wondering why God put this in the bible?.. i'd pass out if i saw a dead person coming up to me !..what did they look like?.. did they smell like lazarus?.. what did they say to the people they saw?..wonder what they were thinking?..wonder where they went after they did their job? ..just wondering out loud....

Around these two verses there is a lot of conjecture and imagination. The earthquake and the opening of tombs (not North American type graves) built in the rock formations. Earthquakes are common in this area. The resurrections are miraculous, however. Who are they, and When did they rise? Here is where we step into conjecture.

To some they are Old Testament saints and their tombs open at Jesus' death,,then wait for the resurrection to receive their spiritual bodies and rise. To others, they are Christians who died before the death of Jesus. The same senario applies, except these resurrected souls pay ba visit to their loved ones to show the victory of Christ over death and before they rise to glory.

There is some thought about the timing of these events..The opening of the tombs with Jesus' death, but their actual resurrection to coincide with Jesus' resurrection.

The primary sermon would be Victory in Jesus.
You might compare such scriptures as: 1 Thess 4"13ff; 1 Cor 15:20; Acts 26:23; Col 1:18; Rev 1:5
    Cheers,

    Jim

I've preached it at a funeral. Main emphasis was that these people who all were somehow miraculously resurrected when Christ died, DIED AGAIN.

They all had died and came back (remember, Abraham said that even if one came back from the dead, no one would listen) and then died again, with their message unheeded.

You'd THINK that they'd be the first converts to the Lord. But nada, nothing, zilch. Just like Abraham said.

    Nobody listened.
