Why Nobody Learns Much of Anything at Church

Most Churches or lamen classes I've see just follow the sunday school books and expound a bit on the prepared lessons. Most don't teach doctoronal ideologies which is really putting the picture together. My $00.02.

 

What are churches doing wrong?

I don't think that's the right question, personally. Rather, the question shoud be, why don't more church members have a burning desire to learn God's Word. I gotta tell ya that church would change then!

Most people are perfectly happy with what they are getting.

 

I agree, I think a lot are happy with just saying I went to Church.

 

I also agree. It seems easier to blame the Church than the individual. Just as I must take responsibility for the success of my diet and execise program - no one can lose weight for me - I must also take responsibility for how well I know the Bible and my level of obediance to it.

 

A true statement... although I'm sure I can find someone to blame for my lack of weightloss... :smilewinkgrin:

Too many sunday school teachers have adjusted to their student's ignorance by teaching to the lowest level (no one left behind) of the class instead of the mean or upper level not taking into consideration that if you teach the seemingly difficult lessons then eveyone learns (line upon line precept upon precept here a little there a little).

One of my great concerns in our independent ranks is the overall level of our theology and understanding of scripture. Unfortunately many cults know more of what we are supposed to believe than our members do.

Just look at most Christian book stores and their supply of reference materials and you will know that is a truth.

We must not forget however: John 21.16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep . 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep

and

Acts 20.28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

It is true that people are to feed themselves at home, but they are also to be fed at church which they are not in many churches I have been in.

The item mentioned of teaching to the lowest level is very true and very abusive to the rest. Why waste your time to go to hear something you've heard a hundred times before?

Rather speaks to the need for THOUGHT in the Christian Ed. Department rather than doing it the way we've always done it before.

Eph 4.11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, [even] Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

As has been pointed out people sit and are happy. Maybe they haven't heard they are supposed to be perfected for ministry. Many church leaders don't want the rest to do anything, that way they can control what is going on :tear:

Have been in churches where people wanted to minister but they weren't allowed to so they drift away.

Let's face it everybody is to blame for the condition their church is in, we are all believer priests aren't we, all responsible before God for our actions?

At least the book tries to fix it :tongue3:, don't know if it succeds or not.

 

The worst compliment a parishioner can pay his pastor whilst leaving the service is: "I enjoyed your sermon, pastor." I would rather have the people squirm a little.
