Why often say here , "IMO" and REALLY mean it?

    Because while Scripture is inerrant, my understanding of it is not.

    My post was the result of observation of many threads here, and a developing conviction to watch what I say and how I say it. I'm sorry the only application any can make is to some some poll.

    But I suppose that limited response fits the norm. What I often see on BB is personal opinion presented as authority over faith and conduct.What sometimes I read are claims with little substantiation in terms of exegetical evidence based on the original languages , or with doubtful coherence with a system of belief, or even without much support from general and easily discovered data. These sort of posts, of which I too am guilty, IMO, do not well reflect a Bible- based , scholarly approach to doctrine. I think Baptists should do better. Popish behavior poorly fits my understanding of the Baptist tradition on epistemology.

    People read these posts and "learn." What is posted then at times functions as "teaching." But in the NT the teacher was responsible for passing on and applying the Apostolic Tradition --not spouting off his personal, unsubstantiated, opining.

    Of course we will disagree. But, if what is said re doctrine is not clearly "apostolic" then I think "IMO" is suitable ,and I think our opinions usually should be fully clothed in proof.

    I agree UZ, but I already know that when you or anyone else speaks to some of these issues it is your opinion, understanding, interpretation, etc. So, IMO, writing IMO is redundant.

    But again, I do agree that many post as if what they say is biblical fact, when, IMO, it isn't. But saying IMO all the time is rather irritating, IMO.

    Let's examine your evidence...

    My evidence is:
    a) +++
    b) +++
    c) +++


    I find Baptists regularly speaking in popish manners , at times even without overwhelming evidence, to be considerably more irritating than being smothered by gracious behavior and honest openmindedness even by those who may have well-based convictions as the effects of scholarly and devoted study.

    Thanks. It appears that you are correct in your assessment of how many of us "irritate" one another by not couching our comments in the language of humility.
