Why should we need a license to sing?

As a boy and a treble in a church choir, this was the best time of the year. The vicar used to take us carol singing and we would be invited in for mince pies and sausage rolls. So far as I am aware, we did not need a licence for this most innocent and traditional of pastimes. Why on earth do you need permission to sing carols?

But you do now that the Licensing Act 2003 has come into force. Then again, you might not. The fact is that millions are going out carolling probably unaware of what they should be doing to make the practice lawful.

I've heard some people sing who couldn't possibly get a license -- myself included! But we still make a joyful noise, and will continue to do so.

I used to sing & play guitar in the Boston subway stations, putting my open case in front, I could make 30-40 dollars every couple of hours, in quarters & dimes, I didn't mind. But I did need to get a liscence to do it. But here, there's no income involved, so I don't see what the problem is.

Besides, I have to listen to profanity-laced gangsta rap coming out of some homeboy's car so loud it rattles my chest. Why don't people regulate that ?

They do. It's called a noise ordinance. In Houston, a radio must register no more than 68 decibels from 15 feet away. This applies day or night, although it is almost never enforced, except under the most extreme of circumstances.

For the record, 68 decibels is about the same as the low setting on an electric mixer.

It appears that link refers to Great Britian, not the US (though it doesnt mean it couldnt happen here).
But in the US, many churches do break copyright law by buying one songbook and making many xerox copies. Their justification is "we dont have that much money to purchase more books". Even making one copy of a copyright work is illegal!

Sounds like you've had an interesting life. What songs did you sing in the Boston underground?

    Laws

It's a proven fact that States are tightening laws against anyone or anything that comes to your door. I look at this as a percaution to ones property and life. I am all into the caroling, but most people are afraid of anyone bothering them. This is my opinion.:godisgood:

Here is what I am thinking,
I am only 18 yet I am in a choir and I have fun with a men's Quartete. I have never heard of a need for a license to sing in US... but there could be one. I believe that it also could be just to make money for the government, that comment could be far fetched but it would not be the first time our government has used stupid things to make money. I do believe that very soon also we will not even be allowed to sing about Christ in the U.S.

Look to the sunrise Jesus is coming!
