If defrag doesn't help, consider what programs you are running. Do you have Yahoo, or some other instant messanger? Try setting them not to load at bootup and see if it helps. My wifes was hanging on Yahoo the other day, it was interacting with some other program she was using, never figured out which. She now opens yahoo only when she wants to use it.

Also, if you are running xp, try booting, shutting down completely, booting, shutting down etc. without opening any programs - do this four times and see if it helps. Windows can repair itself through this process to some extent.

 

START--> RUN--> type "MSCONFIG"--> STARTUP tab--> uncheck everything except your anti-virus and firewall, as well as anything you have to have (broadband drivers and the like)--> APPLY--> OK--> Restart.

This keeps all the little programs that have attached themselves to the Windows boot-up from jumping in with Windows. You should see a marked difference in your boot times.

Have you cleaned up all your temp files?

Search, find, all files and folders, *.tmp and then delete any found. The first time I did this on my old computer (after using ICQ) I had well over 3,000 old temp files.

 

XP also has chkdsk instead of scan disk. Use that. XP also has PC Doctor for Windows and can diagnose a lot of issues.

 

Also, sometimes laptops boot slower if there is a DVD in the drive.

also, did you check the registry to see if the "BOOTSLOW" key was set to true or false
