This is just a quick thought:

Perhaps the reason, or one of the reasons, why Solomon agreed to build a Phoenician style Temple with the aid of artisans from Hiram of Tyre was to acquire, through the lengthy building processes, those secret building crafts and techniques which the urbanite Tyrians knew but which the tribal "barbarian" Israelites were as yet ignorant of. In other words, like a developing nation inviting "first world" foreign capital investment today, like say for an oil rig etc, Solomon may have invited Hiram's engineers in, in order to acquire, for Israel, all those technologies and techniques. Certainly, in the centuries afterwards, Israelite and Judean artificers did indeed build great works, like Hezekiah's Tunnel for instance.

It's logical. It works. It happens all the time today... why not then? Solomon was, afterall, reknowned for his wisdom.
