Will self quarantines work?

I find it suspicious that military personnel will face a 21 day mandatory quarantine, while citizens and medical personnel coming back from Ebola infected countries can do a self quarantine.

Does this seem a little weird, or do you think Obama and the CDC have this policy right on? And can we really trust folks to stay in their home for 21 days on the "honor system?"

What would you do if you were the person making the choices to protect others from a potential outbreak?

For most people, yes. For the selfish few, no. Look at the New York doctor just diagnosed. How could he possibly think roaming the streets, using the subway, Uber, going to large social gatherings, was a good thing? Nancy Snyderman of NBC who thought she was to important, and to good, to abide by their quarantine.

As new research comes out we find out just how little the "experts" know, and it takes just one idiot to blow this thing up here in the US.

The doctor in NY actually did a GOOD job of self-quarantine. He took his temperature twice a day and as soon as he had an elevated temperature of 100.3, he called the authorities. There is no need to stay in full quarantine before you become ill because you are not contagious then.

It is not ALL of the military that is under the quarantine requirement but only the Army. Marines, Navy and Air Force do not have this rule at this time.

Tell me, how isolated is it now?

Watching the experts flip and flop on their "facts," their protocols, and their procedures, I will take the advice of the man who discovered this virus and is shocked at the hubris shown by people concerning this disease. Yes, it was unlikely but not impossible. It has entered the country in two people plus those who we already knew who were infected. Two nurses became ill taking care of patient #1 here in the US. That is 4 Ebola patients in the entire United States.

Realize that NONE of the family got the virus. NONE of the ER staff or patients when patient #1 got it and went to the ER and was misdiagnosed. He then went home with a fever and now spreading the virus - and none of his family came down with it. I'd say that the experts are pretty spot on with their facts based on the past 40 years of studying and dealing with this disease. Just the fact that it can be eradicated in third world countries says a lot.

Let's set this in the right medical situation to allow for infection: Unless [an infected person showing signs of disease] has their spit, mucous, etc land on a surface and you [shortly after] touch it [and subsequently touch your mucous membranes].

During cold and flu season, that last step should never be taken without washing your hands first. So sitting on a bus, touching a surface and using hand sanitizer will kill the virus and you will not get it.

I don't see anywhere in the link where it says that patients are not clear until 42 days. Can you show me a link that does?

Then mandatory temperature checks twice a day until they are cleared. So they lie. Then we check and treat.

You seem to have a problem reading medical papers because it does not say that they never showed fever, diarrhea or vomiting. I don't know where you got that from! Instead, it says:

The most common symptoms reported between symptom onset and case detection included fever (87.1%), fever (76.4%), loss of appetite (64.5%), vomiting (67.6%), diarrhea (65.6%), headache (53.4%), and abdominal pain (44.3%).

That link also states that 95% of the cases were diagnosed by 21 days. NO one died without symptoms. Ebola is not a pleasant way to die and you certainly don't just drop dead and they find out you had Ebola. To think otherwise is just ignorant.

The fact that the overwhelming majority of Americans want a ban on travel from the West African countries does not count because it would not be politically correct to stop the spread of the disease from West Africa because that would be racist.

To be politically correct, we must be a nation without borders, and we are a nation without borders.

If we banned travel from West Africa, then we could also ban illegal immigration from Latin America and the rich want cheap labor and the Democrats want easy votes.

In all of these, you do not see any Democrats volunteering to go to West Africa as healthcare workers. Democrats are not that stupid and they are not altruistic.
