An article at www.thatsracin.com says Stewart wants out of his contract with Gibbs as the end of this year to go drive for CNC Haas. Why would he do this? In my poinion, he wants to do this because it would get Stewart back in a Chevrolet driving Hendrick powered cars. It would allow him to become a team owner at least at some level. At least when he is outperformed by Busch and Hamlin, he could blame it on the car! :)

Here's a salient paragraph from the ESPN article.

Maybe Chevy went to him and talked about the fact that he's driving a Toyota, but they're sponsoring his sprint car and that maybe it would be nice to just be with Chevy in everything he does.

If Stewart bolts Gibbs for Chevrolet, my hat is off to him. I respect his loyalty to a brand.

I would have more respect for him staying loyal to a quality owner like Gibbs over being loyal to a brand. I have never understood loyalty to a brand.

I do not understand why he would make a jump like that. To me he has the perfect setup where he is and he should not fix something that is not broke.

I'm primarily a Chevy guy, so I understand the loyalty to the bow-tie. If you were a fan of a particular brand, I think you'd understand a little better. :)

Regardless, if Chevy sponsors his sprint car program, and he's driving a Toyota, that's an issue that I would think Chevy would like to see resolved one way or the other. And, if not them, then he probably feels a little funny driving a Toyota in one series, but getting sponsorship from Chevy in another. Since Toyota doesn't have any sort of sprint car program, and Tony isn't about to quit his sprint car stuff, Tony probably feels like he needs to do this to secure continuing sponsorship with Chevy.

    Maybe so.

I still think loyalty to people is more important than loyalty to a brand.

Oh well, I will be a Stewart fan regardless of who he drives for, but I do hope he stays with Gibbs.

I think CC is right, that Stewart's business connections make it better for him to be in a Chevy.

The old concept of NASCAR is that people rooted for the kind of car on the track that they owned and drove themselves. That's why there was brand loyalty and NASCAR promoted this idea. As the cars get more and more generic, brand loyalty matters less.

I get that, I just happen to think loyalty to people is more important.

For Stewart, perhaps it is a question of which people to be loyal to? The ones at Chevrolet or the ones at Gibbs? And Gibbs had a relationship that was about people with Chevrolet, but he dropped it for a business decision to go to Toyota. Maybe loyalty to people vs. loyalty to brand is not always simple.

I think you are correct. How can Tony have his other race teams backed by Chevy and race in a non Chevy? It might not look good to Chevy. I was going through Columbia, S. C. yesterday and a race guy on a sports radio station thought that Cevy was putting pressure on him to change or maybe lose them in his open wheel deals. If Chevy pulled the money that they give him in the other could cut deep into his pocket.

With that said, I'm a Ford Motor Co. guy when it comes to NASCAR. I knew Person was great driving for Cotton Owens in those Dodges but when he went to the Wood Brothers driving a Mercury, he became the greatest in my eyes.
