Mat 3:5 Then went out to him (John the Baptist) Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, (KJV)

Is this still the way to draw people to the gospel? Will these methods, obviously effective, still work today?

John preached the Word (vs.2) without compromise, without fear, without concern of whose "toes he was stepping on." Vs. 7

He called sin, sin. He demanded a walk and not just a talk. Vs. 8

A preacher once made the statement, "If you build a fire in the pulpit, people will come to watch it burn."

Will this approach still work today. Can we still draw them in like John did?

I've found were I live people want to have that tickeling of the ears the Bible talks about. I think it's sad that a lot of people have lost all thought of God. I've met two kinds of people. One that says "I'm baptist, I'm baptized, I'm a deacon/sunday school teacher/member of a comitee. {Which isn't getting anyone to Heaven. It takes salvation!} And then there are the ones that laugh and say "What's hell?" and "devil? Yeah right!"
They either have this form of relegion or they don't care.
Sometimes when I'm wittnessing to people I just want to cry. I want to say "Don't you see what Christ did for you?! Don't you care that He died for you?!"
I always try to pray before I go on visitation that God will send us to the people who will be receptive. We've been doing visitation for a year almost. We've seen a hand full get really truely saved. And I'm so thankful that they did, but I WANT TO SEE MORE!
Will they still come? I pray so. But if a preacher didn't preach against sin, and call it what it was, I'd have to wonder what kind of a preacher he was. If people ever hope to really get saved {what I mean by that, is that they don't get a "profession" and the REAL THING} and dedicated to God, and if they ever want to grow in their Christian walk, they have to be told of thier sin.
How will you get saved if you don't know you are a sinner? Jesus came to call the sinner, not the righteous. You have to be told your nothing in yourself. That your works won't get you to Heaven, and no matter what you've done good you are still a dirty rotton sinner, before you can get saved.
And how will you grow in your Christain walk with sin in the way? A pastor has to teach against it so people can know what they are doing wrong and turn from it.
    Goodness me, I didn't even really begain to grow untill a year after I got saved and really started listening to my preacher. I had a temper, country music, pants, stouborn pride, a big mouth and who knows what else to start dieing to. I'm still working on it! {what was that preachers name that said "I die daily."?}
Sin hinders growth. It's gotta go.
YES, by God's grace PREACH AGAINST SIN FROM NOW TILL JESUS COMES!
It's not plesent to have your toes stepped on during a service, but once I get it settled I sure am thankful for it!
People may not like it, but if they realize the state they are in, and turn from it, they'll be thankful for it later.
You men have a wonderful calling, but you've got responsibility. You know what's right, and what's wrong, and it's your job to preach it.
That way us stoubourn, hard headed church members can live for the Lord! :D
Ya'll just keep standing for truth no matter what anyone thinks.

That was none other than the Apostle Paul himself.

1 Cor 15:31 "I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily ." (KJV)

The crowds want "bread and circuses". I will not play that game. Been there, done that, burned the t-shirt and seen the dirth of real spiritual results.

I will preach the Word unashamedly and without compromise. God's Spirit can then work, in place of MY motivation, hype, guilt, intimidation, and psychological manipulation that is evident in the clown churches.

BTW, John the baptizer did not draw that big a crowd. Remember, when it says "all" Jerusalem and Judea went out to hear him, that such is another good meaning of "all" - without distinction, v without exception (everyone). [IMG]

I think Paul's words in 2Timothy 4:1-5 covers it well.

    2Timothy
1I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Pastors, please preach the word given to us by God Himself as written in the Bible for it (and it alone) is the power of God unto salvation.
When I got saved Nov 6th, 1999, I knew that I didn't want to hear about how good I was and how an "all loving God" loves me as I am and doesn't care if I repent and turn from my sins. I wanted to hear the truth of God's word, no matter what, so that I might better know this God that just called to me.

God's word records many times how if the people would turn from their wicked ways and return to Him, that He would forgive their sins and heal them. I believe people still need to hear that same message.
