While I occasionally will look through one of Barclay's works while doing research (there truly is some treasure in there), he is not one of my favorite interpreters.

I think he is liberal. But his historical background material is excellent.
It is interesting to pick up other popular and well known commentaries and see how they almost copy Barclay's historical background material without citing him.

You said it well. He did a nice job with that material and that's primarily what makes his work a valuable resource.Fred Moritz said:

I have found him to be a theological liberal as well. I do echo the sentiments in regards to his historical data.
Most assuredly excellent in explaining the history & culture of the times - best resource I've seen for that!
BUT, as noted by others, I'm in strong disagreement regarding his attempted "normalizing" of the miracles.
The one that jumps out in my mind now is the one of the madman & the swine herd.
IIRC he attributes the actual healing ( casting out the demons) of the guy, to the fact that Jesus was known as a healer, so when Jesus told the demons to scram, the guy responded to the "positiveness" of Christ and literally let his mind "cure itself"!
The hogs running into the sea was (probably) due to the exuberance of the healed man (jumping & hollering etc) that scared the pigs.
Like I said, recalling from memory now so details may be fuzzy; but Barclay emphatically renounces any MIRACLE here.

It's frightening how much agreement we have here, especially since a number of us wouldn't agree on quite a few other things.
