Have you tried it, Trotter? I've heard some good things, but I don't think I'd ever try a beta. I'm not what you would call an early-adopter of new technology.

Looks nice, but be forwarned it imports information on your library into itself and it made a shambles of my information. It doesn't do anything to the music files, just the info/pics etc.

There is an option after it installs for express or do it yourself setting up - try the do it yourself. Express didn't work for me.

I admit I have 500+ cds in mine so mistakes might be expected, but this looks like more than just a few mistakes.

Still playing :)

I also caution caution...

M$ Is one of many pushing the DRM stuff really heavy...

And, the possibility is that some DRM backdoor may be incorporated in there somewhere...

I think waiting until it gets a lot more expert use...

Remember the Sony Scandal where they put a Potentially Devasting Root Kit on peoples computers without asking and had the complicity of the Anti-Virus Companies so you wouldn't find out.

And, M$ isn't know for it's Security Prowess...

So what is DRM?

There is no uninstall program and there isn't a setup in Control panel to remove it. It does set up a restore point for you or asks if you want to - don't remember - that worked okay to get rid of it.

I think I like it, but am renaming some directories in my music so it will sort them correctly :)

Just looked it up. For those less geeky - like me:

Digital Rights Management
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Digital rights management)
Jump to: navigation, search

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is the umbrella term referring to any of several technologies used to enforce pre-defined policies controlling access to software, music, movies, or other digital data and hardware. In more technical terms, DRM handles the description, layering, analysis, valuation, trading, monitoring and enforcement of the usage restrictions that accompany a specific instance of a digital work. In the widest possible sense, the term refers to any such management.

The term is often confused with copy protection and technical protection measures (TPM). These two terms refer to technologies that control or restrict the use and access of digital media content on electronic devices with such technologies installed. There are technical measures that could be used not to restrict use or access, such as to monitor use in order to record rights of a content consumer, DRM critics argue that the phrase "digital rights management" is a misnomer and the term digital restrictions management is a more accurate characterization of the functionality of DRM systems since it is technical restrictions that are managed by the system; compare Treacherous Computing referring to Trusted Computing. There are those who believe that some digital media content publishers claim DRM technologies are necessary to prevent revenue loss due to illegal duplication of their copyrighted works as well as to enable more effective market segmentation. However, others argue that transferring control of the use of media from consumers to a consolidated media industry will lead to loss of existing user rights and stifle innovation in software and cultural productions.

The European Community is expected to create a Recommendation on DRM in 2006, phasing out the use of levies (compensation to rights holders charged on media sales for lost revenue due to piracy) given the advances in DRM/TPM technology.

I tried the custom setup and it didn't do any better. When it imports I think it does so as if you have retained all directories/files with labels that it picks up when you rip the cds. I've changed a lot of the names and I think it was confused.

Restored and got rid of it till they put it out for sure.

I installed it, and have had no problems. but I also don't store music or videos on my computer, either.

The release date for the final version is either the end of May of first part of June.

Basically, this is what the WMP will be in Vista.

In Christ,

Just installed it two minutes ago and then found this thread...

I like the looks of it. It is very different, which will take some getting used to, but overall it seems good.

As for Betas... I get everything I can!
I am using a lot of the Microsoft Live stuff. The Hotmail with Live is a much better setup. But that's another topic...

I just downloaded WMP10 a few days ago and I'm still trying to figure out how to burn CD's. I think I'll wait until I get 10 figured out before testing the waters of 11.

I think WMP10 is on its way out. Jumping straight in at 11 may keep you from having to adapt to something new in the near future.
