Windows Update Problem

Hokay, here's the deal. I cannot download the Windows Media Connect update from Microsoft. I couldn't download a couple of others (Media Player 10 & another one...don't remember which) that were available at the same time.

I was finally able to download Media Player 10 when I tried to play a video clip that used Media Player, and it updated itself. The other update I was able to download when I refused Internet Exploreer's request to be redirected to v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com instead of v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

I am in communication with someone from Microsoft via email. So far, she has had me turn off my firewall and try, turn off my anti-virus and try, turn off boht and try, uninstall Spybot and Adaware and try, update and run AdAware to clean out any ad/spyware and try, perform a clean boot and try, flush something with dos and try, change different settings and try...a lot of things. Still, no dice.

She mentioned uninstalling my anti-virus, but, since I got it as a one year frre trial, and I had to download it (I do not have a CD), I do not see this as a viable option. Besides, the clean boot bypassed it.

So, anyway, anyone have any ideas as to why this one update will not cooperate? And how to fix it?

By the way, I can view the Installation History Page on the website, and it says "Error Code: 80072EFD". When I did a search for "80072efd" I found this definition:

Microsoft technical support was able to give me a solution. Actually, they (she) gave me about twenty over the course of a week or so. She finally hit upon one that worked. She had me delete the contents of teh DataStore folder and the Download folder (in the Win32 folder).

I dunno. Sometimes I really, really love Windows. And then there are days when I wonder why we ever even bothered to invent a computer. Oh well...
